Walking south of Geary along Van Ness presents no problems. However, given your worries about <driving through the Western Addition, if going there (perhaps to Hayes Street Grill), you might decide to take the bus from point to point, walking only the required half block to the restaurant of choice, of which there are quite a few to choose from along Franklin behind the Opera and Symphony Hall.
