The "Road to Hana" is a big marketing scam by the people of Maui. They use it as another "thing" people can do on Maui. Drove the road to Hana during my honeymoon in May. Completely overrated. Saw more scenic waterfalls in the states. Depicted as this mysterious, dangerous, curving, road that if you drive will fill your senses with scenes like you have never seen before. It's slow, but well worth it! And OOOOOO... the waterfalls, sacred pools or whatever. They are sooooo beautiful.. Lies, all lies. Don't waste your time. Tacky, tourist trap. Little venders set up shop near the waterfalls to sell their cheap crap. Elvis pictures ect...
Waterfalls are filled with idiots. Making them look like a picture of a hillbilly swimming hole. Over hyped and not worth your time.

I agree that the road to Hana is HIGHLY over rated, but many people actually enjoy tourist traps and such. Decide for yourself by driving the first part of the road and if you like what you see continue. If not turn around and go back.

Ditto, thought it was too much crazy driving for not enough reward! Sorry, Hana lovers.

Remember, it's the "road" to Hana (and not the destination itself) that you need to enjoy. If you like to just drive, it's a wonderful time you'll have. So don't hurry, do stop every once in awhile, swim, enjoy the scenery, take a nap. Hey you're on vacation in Hawaii!

Way overrated. How many waterfalls do you need to see, plus any really pretty ones have helicopters swooping in about every 20 minutes. Felt I was in a secondary filming of Apocolypse Now. Still having nightmares involving carved wooden Elvis figurines and helicopter tail rotors.

We drove the road to Hana and loved it. It is the journey not the destination that is beautiful. Buy the book "Maui Revealed" then decide if the trip is for you. this book highlights a lot of hidden places that we visited and they were right on the money - private waterfall pools that you can swim in, etc. Do the trip in a convertible! We went all the way around but would probably recommend staying over one night if you don't start really early.
