I feel a lot safer being in New York than some other places I've been in the United States.

Thanks for your replies and reassurance. However, I have this uneasy feeling that all is not well. Could this be to due with the number of responses given to this question. Three responses, albeit positive, does not give a ringing endorsement of safety in the Big Apple.

Do you really think in a time of war and teror a big world class city like New York will not be hit by terror attacks? It is where the media is. If the attack would have killed just as many people in lets say Omaha do you think the media would have played it up as much? Yes, if anyplace will be hit again it will be New York.

I would limit my vactions to places in rural America terorists have never heard of and they would not get much bang for their bucks.

I hope you are just looking for opinions and possibly reassurance - not a definitive answer. I personally would feel OK in NYC right now, but just as many sane people would not. Do you feel safe where you are right now? I feel uneasy, but would feel just as uneasy somewhere else. If you can have a good time, go. If you would be too nervous, follow suggestion of another poster and take a vacation to rural somewhere.

Of course, we're worried and concerned. But, like the British during World War II, it hasn't stop us from trying to live our lives as normally as possible.

What exactly does "Is the Big Apple Safe for tourists?" mean, anyway? Are you talking muggings or terrorism? As for muggings, you have no worries, and haven't for several years now. New York has come a long way from the Charles Bronson "Death Wish" days of the '70s, and lately it's been even safer. As for terrorism, your guesses are as good as mine, but if you're planning to come here, come and have a great time.

We visited NYC for a long weekend at the end of September (my posting is here someplace); I never felt safer nor more welcome. Go.

I have been planning a trip to NYC in December for a long time - and I'm still looking forward to it! But leisure travel should be fun; if you don't feel comfortable, don't go.

Just wanted to say that I have just returned to the UK after a wonderful two week holiday in the USA, visited Boston, Cape Cod, Rhode Islands, upstate New York and 4 1/2 days in New York City. I was amazed by the number of people who said that we were so brave to have visited there. I can't speak for the New York before the terrible attack, but I had a wonderful few days there, everyone was friendly and helpful, I felt safer than I have ever done anywhere else, and I wasn't worrying about terrorist attacks, I had pre-conceived ideas like a lot of people I suppose, and always though New York to be quite a dangerous place, but I can honestly say I felt as safe as anywhere that I have ever been. I wasn't worried about terrorist attacks, I live in London and work in the City, we have had numerous terrorist attacks over the years, from the IRA and although not on the terrible scale that happened in New York, they have killed people and demolished buildings but you have to live your life, we have always gone to work the next day after these bombings, and at any time you can be evacuated from the underground train station or from a building, with minutes to spare. Don't live your lives afraid of going places or enjoying travelling, live each day as it comes. I would fly back to New York tomorrow if I could, it was still an exciting place to be, vibrant and noisy, I loved every minute there.

Realist is right. NYC is not one of the most safe places to be right now. I live near New York and have been in the city several times since the attacks but it is certainly NOT safer than Boise, Gand Rapids, Omaha, etc. etc. even down to Dallas, Reno, Cincinatti. There are very few places in the US more likely to be the focus of another terrorist attack of some sort. I'm not saying don't go to NYC, just don't yearn for someone else to validate your decision to go there. We must learn to live with the risks and leave it than that rather than try to convince ourselves that things are safer than they really are.
