Is Catalina Island worth going to?

We are traveling to the LA area and have done most of the amusement parks among other things before and wondering if taking our teens ages 16, 14, & 11 to Catalina island would be worth the money it will cost. Do you know anything about the snorkeling. We will in LA Mar 17 for the week. What else would be fun to do at Catalina Island?

Gail:

The trip over will be pretty cold; the water temperature is around 55 this week, and it gets very windy on the water this time of year. So, if you take the trip, be prepared. Once on the island, it won't be as bad, plus Avalon is protected by the hills around it. It's about 65 during the day this week--and it hasn't been exactly sunny lately. Bike rentals are popular in Catalina, and there are some great views from the hills near Avalon. There are a lot of interesting sights within walking distance as well. There are several tours of the interior island. I think it's a great place to visit. BUT, it is expensive for that size of crew, so if it were me, I'd check the weather forecast and reserve the boat on a sunny day. Catalina is beautiful, but if it's cloudy or raining, I don't think you'll get your money's worth during a one-day trip. The following sight describes the various boat companies and sights and tours.
