Alaska isn't all that dangerous.. just don't feed the bears, and don't try to fish for your own crab in the Bering Sea(the Discovery channel has enough to deal with right now), and don't hold up traffic on the roads, or try to race with the Harley owners(just signal and pull over for wildlife viewing and photography)..

Oh, restaurant portions are ridiculous, and please avoid the bakery in Soldotna.. people enter normal looking and have to be rolled away later

I think the safe vs. unsafe factor of every city/state is not only where you go but WHAT you are doing. Like girlonthego, I too live in a safe (wealthier) part of Richmond, VA., which has a very high murder rate. But I spend one or more days a week (and some evenings) in the high-murder rate housing projects in the city working with underpriviledged kids. In the projects I know there is a extremely small risk of stray bullets hitting me or being attacked by crack addicts, but I also know that as a white, middle-aged woman I am not a primary target of violence. The guys who are doing the shooting are almost always shooting at fellow drug dealers. Yes, there are tragic cases of innocent bystanders being killed, shot, raped etc., but compared to the drug dealers and gang members being attacked, it's miniscule. So even the "unsafe" areas vary in safeness by what you are there for.

I am surprised that there are not more large cities on the most dangerous list. ie: New York, Miami, Houston, Philly, Washington DC, etc.

You can find an longer list of the most dangerous cities here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15475741/?GT1=8618

I was so surprised to see that N Charleston, SC was #20 on the most dangerous list, right behind Washington, DC! There must be one heck of a sharp distinction between Charleston and N Charleston!

Sedona and Scottsdale are very safe, and probably Flagstaff is too, but Ive never been. Sedona has fascinating otherworldly red rock scenery, wonderful hiking, and interesting ruins from early Native American people. Scottsdale is more an area of glamorous resorts that are fun to stay in if you like that type of thing. But the Sedona scenery is not to be misssed. Check out the Tuzigoot Ruins in the area.

I have also been all over AZ on several trips and have never felt unsafe.

I must say that I felt the most unsafe I have ever felt anywhere during a trip to London, on a Saturday night when the bars closed & some very drunk & disorderly people came pouring out, in order to head to the clubs to continue drinking.

If I had to choose one place in AZ it would be the Grand Canyon - just don't lean over too far!

Lynn100,

First, welcome to the U.S.A.! I’ve been the U.K. many times and I love traveling there. I hope we are as accommodating as you have been to me.

Lori’s response of Oct 26 was great. I have seen this question, in reverse as she says, on the Europe board. People who say “Is Rome safe?” often get pummeled. Not to say that the responses you got were deserved...I simply understand why it irked people.

Unfortunately, the statistics you are getting aren’t telling you much. I’ll take it at face value that they are all correct - it just depends upon what they are measuring. Specifically, what do they mean by “safe” and how is it measured. For example, there isn’t a person in this country who guess that Nevada would be number #1. My goodness, it’s 99% empty desert. But maybe “safe” is considering the road between Las Vegas and Reno, where cross after cross mark a death.

And Tennessee made the top ten? Huh? I don’t know why, but all I can assure is the list you have isn’t telling any helpful story.

You’ll be fine in AZ. And don’t be discouraged about posting again. I think most people do try to help.

unsafe-yes. you are right- 3rd most unsafe state in the nation (most unsafe is Nevada). I went to college at ASU and while in a convenience store there was a gunfight in the parking lot.
