Is 8th Avenue NY "seedy"?

I read a recent post that described 8th Avenue as seedy. We are staying at the Belvedere later in the year and wonder if this is a good choice. My husband likes to be out and about quite late as he is a light sleeper. Opinions appreciated although I realise this can be a bit subjective. Thanks.

Yes, parts of it are seedy. Not unsafe at all, just tacky storefronts/businesses with some down and out looking folks.

I would say that entirely depends on where on 8th Ave you are. What is the cross street?

The Belvedere is FINE -- actually on 48th st. We loved staying there -- loved the bistro w/garden just a few doors down toward 8th, also liked the Brazilian restaurant on the SW corner, and larger bistro on NE corner. Excellent location, no worries about neighborhood, nice place.

As a single woman business traveler I have walked in that area at night, by myself, many times. Never a problem, never even felt threatened.

I also read that post and wondered why the poster called 8th Ave seedy. I have a good friend that lives right in that area near the Belvedere and find it to be a great neighborhood. Lots of activity, good restaurants etc. It can get a bit seedy over on 9th Ave but even that is mild.

I stayed at 46th and 8th, was traveling alone, I walked the streets til 1AM each day and I never felt scared. Yes, 8th St is kinda shabby but it didn't feel unsafe. I loved it.

Thanks to all, I feel fine about that now. I don't mind an interesting mix and find that more appealing than pristine, if you like. Safe is the main thing and obviously people haven't had a problem with this. Really looking forward to our trip.
