InterIsland Flights/Honolulu Airport Question
I have posted on a previous thread that we will be celebrating our 39th Anniversary on Kauai in October. I have a new question.
United changed our flight times, and I suspect this will happen again before October.
The flight to Honolulu has a shorter layover in SFO and gets us to Honolulu an hour earlier - Great!
But our flight home to LAX leaves Honolulu an hour earlier too.
On 10/14 we are flying from Kauai on Hawaiian Airlines arriving in Honolulu at 10:24 AM. Our United flight now leaves at 12:45 rather than 1:40.
I assume we will arrive at the Interisland Terminal - right? If I am correct the United gates are all the way at the opposite side of the airport. How big is the airport in Honolulu?
Will we have to claim our luggage from Hawaiian and recheck in at United?.
Do we have to go through security screening again?
Do you think we have enough time - 2:21 right now?
What is the minimum we need, if United changes our times again?
Would I be able to change my Hawaiian flight to an earlier flight without penalty?
As you can see, I am worrying. Thanks for any insight you might have about the procedures in the Honolulu airport.
Hopefully!

HNL is not that big.
The Interisland Terminal is connected to the Main Terminal. It will probably be about a 10 minute walk from the Hawaiian gates to the United gates.
They also have wiki-wiki buses that take a little less time.
You should be able to check your luggage straight through. If not, it doesn't take long for the luggage to off the plane.
Either way, 2 hours 20 minutes is plenty of time between flights. No worries!

No you won't be reclaiming baggage.
No you won't be going through security again, only going through USDA inspection (for fresh produce). That is done either just before wiki-wiki or when walking between terminals.
Walk is longer than 10 minutes. At normal pace, including Ag., I'd say 20 minutes or so.
Still plenty of time. It is a nice walk, and if you have more time, there are very pleasant garden areas to relax in.

Just be sure that Hawaiian has your United info when you check in at the Lihue airport and your bags will be checked through to LAX.
The walk is not that bad and there is the wiki-wiki if you don't want to walk between the terminals. I think it took is about 15 minutes at a normal pace to get between the terminals.
I'm hoping to convince DH to go in October since we didn't get to go in April. It is his brithday month so that may be a good reason!

Thanks for the replies!
I have been thinking about the luggage issue and although I would love to check it in Kauai and not see it again until Boston, I think this might be a mistake.
If it was a single airline, or even airlines with Code Shares, I could see checking it through. But I am afraid that checking it with Hawaiian in Kauai and expecting them to get it to United in Honolulu and then on to Boston through LAX is a diaster in the making.
Any other thoughts?

Check your baggage in Kauai straight through to Boston.
If you check it only to HNL, you almost guarantee it will not arrive with you. It means you have to pick up the baggage, go outside to stand in line and check it in, then go back through the security line.
