Interesting/Unique things to do in Baltimore?

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed Baltimore last year, so we're coming back again for a long weekend in September. We've done Inner Harbor, Camden Yards (we're back for the Sox, we're from Boston), Fells Point, etc.

Is there anyone out there with a real passion for the city that might be able to recommend some other interesting or unique or local fun? Markets, a great park, an interesting neighborhood, whatever, I'd love some great local suggestions for spending a lovely September Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks!

Haven't been there in years, but Lexington Market is always worth a visit.

Suggest you go to google and search out some Baltimore visitor-type web sites. There may be some festivals and such that will coincide with your visit.

Annapolis, which is a few miles down the road, might also be worth the trip. Fun and lots of charm.

Hi Karen
Annapolis is a mere 20 minutes down I-97 from the Baltimore beltway. You can't do any better than time in our lovely town. Just check the Annapolis site and see what's happening that weekend. October weekends are bad as we have two major boat shows but September weekends are great. If you're into history, there's much to see and do in the city. If you're into medieval times - there's a great Renaissance Festival in Crownsville.(just above Annapolis) Check www.rennfest.com. navy football 9/07; 9/21; 9/28 tickets 1-800-US4-Navy. Maryland Seafood Festival 9/6 thru 9/8 at Sandy Point State Park - visit www.mdseafoodfestival.com And of course you can tour the Naval Academy, the Maryland Capitol, 4 homes of signers of the Declaration of Independence and of course, our cobble-stoned streets of the harbor area. If you get down to the harbor area I'd recommend an Irish restaurant Galway Bay for a great lunch or dinner - food is superb!

There is a nice railroad museum on Pratt Street.

There is a section of town called Canton which has been gentrified, great old buildings, good restaurants, especially Bo Brooks for crabs (go early).

Ellicott City is west of town, a 19th century mill town that has the most eclectic collection of shops and restaurants you could want.

Ladew Topiary Gardens, Northeast of town, are amazing--many acres of plants, bushes, and trees carved into fabulous shapes.

Cruising and boozing in Fells Point, go and eat Bertha's Mussels.

The Walters Art Gallery and the Baltimore Museum of Art are not far apart and both are very good.

Have fun.

Federal Hill is a nice area to stroll, at night, I say go to Power Plant live...it's a courtyard of about 6 different bars and restaurants and gets pretty crowded with a good mix of well dressed over 21 year old college students and young adults. It's located off Market street by the Ruth'sChris. You can also head to Fells but you've done that already and it gets a little ghetto at night. You can take a cruise from Baltimore to DC but I dont remember the name of the operator. Check out digitalcity.com and type in Baltimore for a better listing.

I notice a mention of the upcoming Seafood Festival at Sandy Point State Park.

My wife and I went to it several years ago. And it was a major disappintment. It was arranged so that each vendor had a variety of food. In other words, there was only one stand selling crabcakes. One selling fish sandwiches. One selling hard crabs. You get the idea. And the food, in addition to being pricey, was bad. Each stand was run by an area non-profit (fire companies, fraternal clubs and the like.) And the lack of competition really showed.

I've eaten a lot of seafood in my time. My mother came from the Eastern Shore, and I spent summers on Smith Island as a youngster. But I found this venue a poor excuse for representing Maryland seafood. Perhaps it's changed....

Have you tried Canton? It is a nice neighborhood where I run my own B&B and I think our area is very COOL. Give me a call and I will tell more or look at my site www.theinnat2920.com.

Baltimore has may cool things to see and do outside of the Inner Habor.

Hasn't anyone noticed that this post is two months old, and the regular baseball season is over?
