interesting find: an electronic wallet or safe

I found this in reading my travel literature this morning....seems like a good backup when you travel: a free and secure account to have your passport and other critical information when you travel. Does anyone have experience with this or other sites like this?

I just e-mail a copy of my passport, my CCs and any other info I may need to myself. Save the e-mail in my "saved e-mail" and I'm good to go. I can access it anywhere in the world and it's free....

I use AA's method too. I make a folder on my email page for each trip we take and email myself all the information that I may need and then stick the emails in that folder - reservations for airlines, hotels, cars, etc. as well as passport and credit card info. It works well.

I do that as well and have loved it but I am reading on other threads here that it is not as secure as we might like. I am still trying to figure that out. If any experts in this area can enlighten the three of us, that would be great.
This service is free, by the way. I just thought it might be more secure.

Your link doesn't work. Log-in needed.

It is my understanding, some on-line company will keep your information.

Why would anybody trust them more then e-mails???????

OK, let's say you don't trust the Internet (and I don't blame you), do you have a trusted member of your family or a friend, can you leave all paper copies with him/her/them, in a sealed envelope if you want to, and they will fax it to your hotel in case of emergency?

Hi Faina,

I think the link does work....you log in if you are a member but there is also a box for sign up to join. I found out about this on smartertravel.com so I thought it was a reliable reference source.

I can arrange for someone to have manual copies but I like the electronic ease....was just looking for more security than the server method many of us are using. I really like the server method; it is working great for me....just a little paranoid about after reading the thread on laptop security.

I would be paraniod too about leaving all vital information with some company, and no idea who runs it and who has access and in what country.

Hello,

I work for PassPack, an online password manager and reading some of the posts left I think it could meet some of the needs everyone was talking about.

It's a secure (using advanced encryption) place to store not only your passwords but your document info, reservation and flight numbers etc. and it's online which means you can access it from anywhere.

Sending all your info, especially credit card info, via e-mail is never a great idea since email accounts are not really created to keep that sort of info safe.

Happy and safe travels.

I too use the email method but I keep half the information of a single item in one email accunt, and the rest of it in another. So for a CC#, half of it is in one email, and the other half on another. Almost like writing it on a piece of paper and cutting it down the middle and storing in different places, different password sign up.

I don't trust emails to keep all the information in one place....

Louise,

I agree with you about e-mail not being 100% secure but I have a simple solution. I break up all my CC numbers and/or any important personal info into 2 different e-mails, e-mailed from 2 different e-mail addresses to 2 different e-mail addresses. Some hacker would really have to be lucky to intercept all 4 e-mails and then have the ability to put it together.

This method has worked for me for years now and I have never had problems yet. I'm sure your business serves a certain need such as important family documents, insurance papers, wills, etc., but I think it's a little overkill for a simple trip. JMHO.
