Inter-island airplane tickets

Has anyone figured out how to come up with a inexpensive inter-island air fare? We are looking at tickets for the month of October and the fares right now are running around $160.00. How do people afford to fly around the islands? We haven't been in a couple of years, but I know we didn't pay this much. We will welcome any suggestions. Thanks, Shanart

I have not tried it yet, but I recall a post stating that Aloha Air will give a 25% discount if you're a triple AAA member.

We usually redeem FF miles with Hawaiian Air (e.g., partners:NW, CO, AA)which used to be 5,000 last year but now are 10,000 miles per flight (with CO & AA, NW?).

I don't know where you're looking, or if you're pricing round trip rather than one way, but the cheapest airfare I could find today was either Aloha (L class)or Hawaiian (S class) for $76.60 per person per one-way flight on October 8, HNL to OGG (Maui). It should be the same price for other island pairs as well.

I don't believe AAA offers the 25% discount on Aloha any longer. At least, I could not find it on either company's website. I once used that! Also, the Entertainment Book used to offer 25% off coupons on Aloha, but no more! Everyone is complaining that air fares are about twice what they were just a couple of years ago, inter-island. My sister was just there, and said the same!

If you go to Aloha's website and search the Aloha Pass fares you will find one-way interisland fares for $59, including taxes. You will need to sign up for an Aloha Pass number first. I just booked a flight for my husband's birthday in October.

Another possibility is to use frequent flyer miles. Many of the big FF groups have either Hawaiian or Aloha as a member, and inter-island flights are only 5000 miles.

I'm using FF from American Airlines for my upcoming trip to Hawaii. My costs were up to almost $800US for 4 flights when someone on this forum suggested using FF. It was only 5,000 points per trip, which was great when I needed two round trips to Kaua'i and then two more to the Big Island. I was so glad I used the points and saved the money for my adventure activities!

I fly interisland at least once a week and it is shocking how the airfares have climbed. Usually I fly free on Aloha Pass beacuase we have so much mileage built up. The few times I have purchased tickets, I have gotten the 10% discount on Aloha using AAA card.

Occasionally I will try to redeem miles with various frequent flyer accounts that don't have enough miles in them for a mainland ticket.

United and Delta miles can be used on Aloha.
American and COntinental on Hawaiian.
