Info on luggage tag
DH is currently on an expedition going to Antarctica. His luggage with ALL his cold weather clothing was lost before he boarded the ship. Yes, pretty awful. The ship was able to provide him with a good deal of clothes through their shop but not everything [think socks, underwear etc].
----
Got an email today from someone that works for one of the airlines that DH flew. He found the backpack!! Now to get it back to him when he returns to land.
And the take away - don't just put your address and/or phone # on a luggage tag. Put email address on it AND have more than 1 email address. IF this had only been sent to DH's email, it might not have been seen until he was back in US. My email was also on the tag. And if there was only an address or phone number, he might not have ever managed to get it back. Hopefully, they will be able to get it to him before he flies home.

Info inside is good but what if someone finds it and the bag is locked and they have no way to get inside?
You could still do that, but just having email on outside seems to be a really safe/efficient way to be contacted.

Put a copy of your airline itinerary inside each suitcase.

I think of it this way: for every trip, put the best way to reach you.
For some trips, it's my cell phone # and email. Occasionally, though, it may be someone else's email and/or cell.
But this is an excellent reminder to consider this question for every trip, or at the very least for those unusual ones.

There is a free program called DesignPro (from Avery) intended for printing labels and business cards. Careful abbreviation and data selection allows me to print an itinerary with contact numbers and dates on virtual business cards that I print on paper and slip into the luggage tag behind the regular name ID card. I also put a sheet of this itinerary in the outside pocket of anything that has an outside pocket and inside the luggage as well. If they can't find me, they don't want to.

That is good advice.
Years ago before email and cell phones I was traveling alone so I put both DH work phone number and our home number on small luggage and my parents home phone. The point is to have back up.
A few years ago a man took my suitcase by mistake and the only one left on the carousel, I figured must be his. So I called the number on that suitcase and sure enough it was his and he had my suitcase.
