Hi ,
in Septembre 2002 ,I am planning to visit USA having a tour with a car in Arizona - Nevada, Utah and California.
I 'd like to know how much time is needed to visit (only by car,no trekking or biking) the following places based on this calendar:
9/23 arrive at Gran Canyon late afternoon with accomodation at GCanyon;
9/24 morning visit of G Canyon and in the afternoon travel to Monument Valley - 183 miles - 4 hours (accomodation in Kayenta);
9/25 morning visit of Monument Valley and in the afternoon travel to Moab - 159 miles - 3 hours and half (accomodation in Moab)
9/26 morning visit of Arches e Canyonlands and and in the afternoon travel to Bryce - 282 miles - 5 hours and 45 (accomodation in Bryce)
9/27 morning visit of Bryce canyon and and in the afternoon travel to Las Vegas - 257 miles - 4 hours and 55 (accomodation in L.V)
9/28 morning travel to Death valley and in the afternoon visti Death valley - 176 miles - 4 hours and 41 (accomodation in Death Valley area)
9/29 morning travel from Death Valley to Yosemite Nat Park (all day travel) - 284 miles - 9 hours and 53 with accomodation at Yosemite.
9/30 morning visit of Yosemite park and in the afternoon travel to San Francisco 196 miles 3 hours and 45 (accomodation in SF).
10/1 morning travel from San Francisco to Monterey and S. Maria 296 miles 5 hours (accomodation at S.Maria)
10/2 morning travel from S.Maria to L.Angeles ( 172 miles )arriving late night.2 hours and 55min
Based o the time to spend in each place and considering the time for moving from one place to another (miles and time is estimated by Randy Mc Nally Itineraries) I'd like to know if the itinerary is substainible and if I can arrange accomodation in the places above mentioned.
Tkank you in advance for your help/suggestions.
Have a nice day.
Pio

Hello Pio! Welcome to the US. I have just read quickly over your itinerary, but looking at the number of hours you will spend every day on the road makes me want to weep. I fear that all you will remember about the wonderful sites you have chosen is your dash from one to the next. Please reconsider and cut out a number of the sites so you can spend more time enjoying your favorites.
I will have more time a little later today to help with your itinerary, but I'm sure other Fodorites will give you their ideas too.

To enjoy some of the parks you are going to have to do some hiking. Not talking serious hiking but short walks ranging in length from 1/4 mile to a mile or two.
9/24 - spend most of the day at GR. Canyon touring the east and west rim drive. Don't waste daylight driving place to place. Leave the Canyon at dusk and head for Kayenta
9/25 - take a 2 hour jeep tour of the VAlley and head for Moab before noon. With a 3 pm or so arrival in Moab you will have time to visit DEad Horse POint STate Park for a great view of the Canyonlands.
9/26 - Spend as much time in Arches as it takes to walk to most of the arches. Could take less than 3 hours
9/27 - start touring Bryce early and spent most of the day at Bryce and then head Zion since it is on the way to Las Vegas. Overrnight in Springdale.
9/28 - Tour Zion before heading for Las Vegas. You can make up the day as follows
9/29 - leave very early for DEath Valley. Drive through the Valley spending three or four hours before starting out for Yosemite. If you can't make it to Yosemite stop somwhere along the way to overnight
9/30 - spend the entire day at Yosemite, Head for SF during the evening hours.
It is not the way I would do it - would spend more time in the Parks but your trip is doable.

I agree with Westerner. You've planned too much for the time you'll be here.
One example: It doesn't make sense to drive 10 hours from Death Valley to Yosemite and then spend a mere 3 or 4 hours in Yosemite. You'll barely have a taste of its grandeur in that time.
Another example: Why travel all that distance to San Francisco and only spend a brief time there. Again, it's almost not worth it for a brief visit. (PS: It'll take you closer to 4 1/2 hours to get from Yosemite to San Francisco. A lot of your estimated times are bare minimums.)
I'd leave out the last part of your trip, i.e., San Francisco, Monterey and Santa Maria. As great as those areas are, I'd save them for another trip and instead spend more time seeing the scenic wonders you have planned to see. I assume you're going to Los Angeles because you depart from there to return home. If that's not the case, then why include it in your plans?
And finally, do you really want to spend more time driving than visiting the sites themselves?
