Wow I go to Chicago fairly often because my brother lives there, but we haven't checked out 1/2 these things!

My brother and his wife have taken my girls to a store called Lush - all homemade cosmestics. It is on Armitage near Halstead. I am not sure what neighborhood that is though.

Southport is a great area - my SIL used to work on that st and they still frequent the Music Box and some of the shops and cafes near there. My nieces actually go to school in that neighborhood.

We have eaten at Bucca di Beppo's a few times. It is a chain, but it doesn't seem like it. It is family-style Italian food and we have had some great dinners there. It is a fun place and you get a lot of food for the money. I think it is less touristy than Rainforest Cafe of Hard Rock. I am sure you will find a lot of options for food - we are usually a group of 8 with kids so our options are more limited!

Have fun!

You don't get much cheaper or cooler than "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind," but if you'd be uncomfortable hearing bad language or sex jokes in front of the kids you might want to skip it. Same goes for Wiener's Circle.

Merrytravel -- I heard about the Neo Futurists through friends and the Chicacgo Reader (which I read often.) It was one of things to do on our last trip but we ran out of time. Definitely planning on it this time around. The theater is Andersonville - right? I also know it starts and ends fairly late. Is it still possible to get a cab in Andersonville after midnight? (Not familiar with this area, so want ot make certain in advance).
Thanks again everyone!

AmyCal, just thought you might want to know that Lush is a chain. Surprised you haven't come across it elsewhere. They have about 50 stores nationally.

Just saw there's another festival on the 28th....the Guitar Festival. Eric Clapton, BB King and a host of others.

Sounds good -- except for the whole "Tickets start at $315.00" thing -- yikes!

Ikes...didn't know the price. Just saw a blurb on it in the elevator. Assumed it was the typical Chicago festival.

No problem, Hills -- it's not like there aren't hundred other FREE things to do that weekend!

The August AAA living had some info on Chicago for Less that made me think of you. Highlights of the article:

Art Institute is free after 5 PM on Thursdays and Fridays.

On Saturday morning, the Loop Tour Train has free rides. There are four free tours every Saturday- tickets are needed. They are available starting at 9 AM on Saturdays at the Chicago Office of Tourism Visitor Center in the Chicago Cultural Center.

For food, on the north side near Wrigley Field, there is Take Five where everything on the menus is $5.

It also mentions Hot Tix and the day of performance drawings for the chance to buy Wicked tickets for $25.

Brookside, I'm Chicago born-and-bred, but no longer a resident (sigh...). You said you've traveled there often. I'm just curious...where is it you currently reside?

Last fall I went to the Wicked theater and put my name in for the drawing for reduced price tickets that evening. Winners only got 2 tickets. There were a number of winners, but also many, many disappointed folks who did not get tickets (including me). So, while it might be a fun thing to try, don't count on definitely getting tickets that way.
