Indian crafts in Sedona?

Planning a trip making a loop from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon to Sedona. Will I be able to purchase authentic Indian crafts in this area?

Why do you say Garlands? Everything I've read says it is European & not traditional Southwestern at all.

Sedona, being a tourist mecca (a very beautiful one!) , has many places to buy Native American crafts. If you do any driving thru reservation lands, you will see many, many roadside shops and tables with local crafts.

Exit the Grand Canyon on Hwy 64 towards Cameron, AZ for the scenic overlook views and once you leave the park you will see many Native American stands with handmade crafts.

There is a really large group of stands at the Little Colorado Overlook just before Cameron. We stop there often and have bought some really nice things there.

IWe are going to Sedona after the Grand Canyon. Would the stands you are referring to be in that direction or another? If another, how far out of the way would it be? Would I be able to find sculptures and art or just things like suncatchers and wood carvings?

As the first poster pointed out, Garland's has an incredible selection of Navajo rugs and SW Indian jewelry. Also, they are very knowledgeable about their merchandise and have been in business a long time. There are times that some shops tend to sell "authentic" for things that would be "stretching it".

as Utahtea says, there are loads of little stands if you exit the GC toward Cameron. Also as you leave Flagstaff on 89A, there used to be stands as you start to go down into Oak Creek Canyon (I don't remember them there last time I went in Oct., but then I wasn't looking)

If you are interested in top quality, Garland's is the place. There are two Garland's stores, one in Oak Creek Canyon about 4 miles north of Sedona on Hwy 89A, and the other at the bridge over Oak Creek, just south of the intersection of 89A and 179. The canyon store has silver, gems, kachinas. The bridge store has pottery and the most magnificent collection woven articles you will ever see.

If you are interested in trinkets, however, check out the stands at the top of Oak Creek Canyon on 89A just before the switchbacks descend to the canyon floor. Or there are stands near the Dairy Queen in the canyon on 89A just before you enter town.

I don't know where CherokeeRose got her information, but it is just plain wrong.

Garland's is just a fabulous shop. We are making a special sidetrip this summer to Sedona just to go back to Garlands. See their web site at www.garlandsjewelry.com

We just got back from an Arizona/New Mexico vacation. We did our "Indian Jewelry" shopping in Santa Fe, Cameron, and Sedona. Santa Fe actually seemed to have the best bargains, with the native Americans selling their art in Old Town. We stopped in Cameron, and I found some other reasonably priced trinkets to bring home. In Sedona, it seemed as if the prices for the equivalent silver jewelry was higher than the other two locations. Could it be a higher priced area?

I have gotten good quality (not trinkets, but good quality inlaid stones and silver) jewelry at the stands at the scenic overlook between Sedona and Flagstaff. The best pieces I have gotten are Zuni. I have one piece that has 10 different stones inlaid in it, and every time I wear it people comment on it. It is very unique. The Dairy Queen area has had trinkets when I've been there, but I have gotten seriously good jewelry at very good direct rates at that scenic overlook. It would be on your left if you are driving btwn. Flag and Sedona, half way down the Oak Creek Canyon rd., Hwy 89A.
