I haven't lived in the area for quite a while, but when I did my two favorite restaurants were Frankie & Johnny's (a few locations but the original/Mountain View restaurant had the best cooks), and Kabul in Sunnyvale (Afghani cuisine). Neither one sets a record for ambience, but imo the Mostacioli di Bari at F&J's should be registered as an addictive substance.

I'm baack... and as usual, things don't always turn out as planned or even in a way to come up with Plan B. However, ellenbw, thanks to you we did go up to Saratoga for a lovely afternoon at Hakone Gardens -- just beautiful, in full bloom, so restoring -- and then briefly at Villa Montalvo, also lovely, and must be a great place to see a play.

Two of us went to an Earthquakes game, second ever played in the new stadium -- wish good luck to that team!

Otherwise the sidetrips (Sonoma 1/2 day, Carmel 2 days) were best, and we had relatively little control of our dining options, it turned out. However, the Campbell Sat. morning Farmers' Market was fun and ... er... rewarding.

As for the most special dinner, here's what I posted inadvertently on my query re: Carmel -- but this is technically in San Jose, but up above it to the east on Mt. Hamilton Rd.:

"Thought I'd update with a report that we were treated to a lovely dinner at the Mt. Hamilton GrandView Restaurant, overlooking (from WAAAAAY up - quite a drive!) the San Jose valley and lower bay. Food was special and better than average although not quite 4-star - large (too large) portions and occasionally overdone sauce. But for a birthday it was great (there were 3 other birthdays being celebrated and a hard-sell taste-sampling for a wedding going on around us. Nonetheless, the setting and sunset were commandingly lovely so we didn't mind."
