ideas for S Utah vacation

We are planning a vacation in Aug-Oct. can only get away for about 6 days. Would like some suggestions for Utah. Thinking of Moab and then down to Bryce/ Zion N.P. is that too much to try to fit into 6 days? What are the "not to miss sights " ? Love to horseback ride. Thanks for any help.

This is a do-able vacation, although it will only whet your appetite to return. We did this trip in 2001:
Day 1: Flew into SLC, drove to Moab
Day 2: Arches NP, second night in Moab
Day 3: Drove around/hiked Canyonlands NP, spent night in Monticello
Day 4: Hiked Natural Bridges NP, spent night at Fry Canyon
Day 5: Drove to Capitol Reef NP & hiked, spent night in Torrey
Day 6: Drove to Bryce NP, hiked & spent night at Bryce Canyon Lodge
Day 7: Drove to Zion NP, hiked & spent night at Zion Lodge
Day 8: Back to SLC, dropped vehicle, and fly out
You could eliminate night in Monticello- we wanted that cushion since we wanted to check out Canyonlands NP and Natural Bridges- really Canyonlands deserves much, much more time. We liked staying at Fry Canyon because it's such a unique place- uttterly in the middle of nowhere, a former mining post. Believe its addy is www.frycanyon.com. Definite places to visit are Arches, Zion and Bryce NPs, and Capitol Reef if you can add it in. Don't know info on riding opportunities; check the Zion and Bryce Lodge info at the www.nps.gov site. Hope this helps.

Hi Leslie!

Check out Equitours. They are an excellent riding tour company & one of their rides is in southern Utah. It goes by/though the Natl Parks, but not Moab/Arches. It's offered in the spring & fall only.

Even if you don't want to spend a whole week riding, the companies may have other options for you.

While in Moab, try to do a float down the Colorado & be sure to see the rock art!

Sept/Oct would be the bes time. Aug is TOO HOT! (Except for Bryce at 8,000 ft.)

PS - I just remembered I once did a full day ride out of Bryce arranged through Ruby's Inn. They trailer you & the horses out of the park about 30 minutes' drive. The ride includes lunch & is really beautiful. It's a full day, so this is for experienced riders. Have fun!

...spent 7 days in moab last year..could have spent another 7 weeks there without getting bored. did 3 days of hiking in arches; 1 day hiking in canyonlands; 1 day raft trip (adrift adventures); 1 day biking up to hurrah pass; 1 day 4-wheeling with the rental SUV. everything was great although i would pass on the biking trip...even the easy trails are butt-busters.

If you do go to Moab, try to stay at the Sorrel River Ranch (www.sorrelriver.com). The place is great, located on the banks of the Colorado River. The views can't be beat.
