Looking for suggestions on a good family vacation destination in late June...kids are 8,6,2,1
Really don't want to go to Florida again, thinking about somewhere to relax but also with fun stuff for kids...any ideas appreciated!

We did a houseboat vacation with our family last year and the kids really enjoyed it. We went to Dale Hollow, border of Tenn and Ky. Cumberland Ky would be good also. There are many places to do houseboat vacations. Make sure you get a good, fairly new boat. We had three bedrooms. You take your own food, store it in your terrific kitchen on board, pull a dingy behind you (available for rent where you rent your houseboat) and take off. You do not get back to shore until your rent time is up. You just cruise the water. We would tie up every afternoon (you just run your bow on shore and then tie off) The kids can swim, and in the evenings we would have a bonfire and roast hot dogs etc. We pulled, a row boat behind us in order to take our trash to the nearest marina each morning. We also pulled two wave runners. We found that for a family it was a great vacation.

While your 2 youngest children are too young to truly "appreciate" D.C. it is a nice place to visit in the spring. We lived there when our daughter was a baby and used to enjoy strolling on the mall and taking a picnic. I think the 6 and 8 year olds would like the Air and Space Museum and Lincoln Memorial. D.C. is also nice because there are many side-trips you could take like Williamsburg, Chincateague, Antiem, Shenandoah...
I have never been to San Diego, but we are currently planning a trip there for October. To me San Diego sounds like an ideal family vacation. I can't wait to go to the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park, Legoland, to build sandcastles on the beach with my daughter and show her the ocean.

Rent a house on Oahu in Hawaii. We have done that with our kids for the last four years and it's the perfect mix of relaxation and things to do. Get a house right on the beach because you'll have many trips from house/kitchen/bathroom and back with the little ones. You can take them snorkeling in Hanuama Bay, the aquarium in Waikiki, there's a zoo and sea park. We rented a house in Kailua but there are also some nice options on the north shore. Oahu is the easiest to fly into, no need to change planes with four kids.
I'd also recommend San Diego. My kids loved Legoland and the zoo. Again, I'd suggest renting a house on the beach. Kids and the beach always seem to be the right combination.

san diego - rent a house on south mission beach - you are right on the beach which the kids will love, boardwalk is right there and great sunsets.
for kids your age, lego land is recommended (8 yr old may be a little old). i think the zoo would be a bit much with so many kids. it's alot of walking and the 1 & 2 year old wouldn't appreciate it.
there is a children's "pool" in la jolla which has been overrun with seals. kids love going there.
harbour cruises are interesting or take the ferry from downtown to coronado so the kids get a boat ride.
balboa park has some interesting museums.
it's a great city.
