icy point straight and other excursions

were are headed on a 7-day cruise on the summit celebrity.

in juneau, we are renting a car for the glacier garden and mend. glacier, followed by some downtown sightseeing.

in skagway, we are doing the train trip in the afternoon, but we are looking to do something fun in the am.

in ketch, we are fishing for half the day, and we are looking for some suggestions for an afternoon excursion.

i have never heard of icy point straight, so any and all suggestions there would be great.

thanks y'all.

ISP is a new port, a native village of 850 residents in Hoonah, and a new rebuilt cannery/dock area. The best tours would be whalewatching which is almost always great, the nature and bear tour to the river valley to watch bear fishing. This can be hit and miss based on other reports. There is a native dancing show, beach walk and other things. A few nice shops, not all the touristy shops for miles like you see in others. People are very friendly. There is also fishing charters available or small boat whalewatching. Search for Hoonah, Alaska on google.

A car rental in Juneau is a hinderance for downtown touring, you won't find any parking space, most likely. Best rental company to consider if you haven't already is Rent a Wreck. Also consider a stop at the Hatchery and Brewery since they are out of town, and a drive on Douglas Island. I would then turn in the car and then tour downtown. Misty fjords flightseeing is a top Ketchikan choice. In Skagway- head to the Park service Visitor center. http://www.nps.gov/klgo/schedule.htm

Also a great port to do laundry.

Icy Strait Point is such a new stop there is not much about it in guide books. Someone did post an excellent write-up about it on cruisecritic.com under boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t+184529

We took the Summit in May. Had an excellent trip. Only disappointment was Icy Strait. We went on a Salmon Fishing Excursion and it was not at all the the description said. We never went into the deeps waters, but remained close to shore the whole time. The boat was supposed to leave port at 2:00 but the excursion was supposed to go until then and I question how this could be done and would we be cut short. They reassured us they would send a last tender at 2:00 for us, but at 1:20 we docked because the guide was called to come in so we could make the 1:30 tender. We were not happy. Other than that, ISP is a cute little town but not really much to do. If you like adventure, you might want to try the ATV excursion. We heard it was great. If you have anymore questions about the trip you can email me at [email protected]. Have fun!
