Would recommend the Sheraton as it is closer to Whaler's Village, better snorkeling and a larger beach. The hotel seemed brighter and more well maintained. The rooms at the Hyatt are supposed to be in the process of refurnishing or finished. Check this out before you go!

My husband and I were not impressed with the Hyatt on Maui. It was a very busy resort and did not give us that relaxed Hawaii feeling that we're used to! Also, the rooms are NOT worth the money. We paid $250/nt and got upgraded to a Regency club room (frequent Hyatt traveler). We would have never paid $500/nt for it.
If you really want to be on Kaanapali, stay at the Sheraton. It's more serene, and the rooms are much nicer.
Wailea (at the other end of the island) is actually our favorite. The Renaissance is really nice.
Good luck,
Julie

We stayed at Hyatt in '98 and absolutely loved it. We've been to Kaanapali about 6 or 7 times now.
OUr first choice is Kaanapali Ali'i condos, but for hotels, the Hyatt is excellent, but we also enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton 2 years ago too!
If you don't mind a bit of a lengthy reply I'll give you my honest opinions about both.
Rooms at the Hyatt are 451 square feet.
At the Sheraton, we had a room that was embedded into the black rock with ocean view, and it was tiny! Just enough room for a king bed and 2 chairs and table. I think we had one of their smaller rooms, actually.
Both had very good service, i.e., rooms were made up efficiently every day.
Both hotels we had an ocean view. The o/v at Sheraton was actually better, as we were nearer to the beach than at the Hyatt which is set back in further.
We really enjoyed both properties' pools, although the Hyatt's is a bit fancier in a Disneyland type of way.
The Sheraton's is more laid back, but has a nicer view of the beach and ocean while you lay at the pool.
The beach in front of the Hyatt is not nearly as nice as the beach in front of Sheraton, but the grounds of the Hyatt more than make up for the lack of beach!
Beautiful tropical grounds at Hyatt.
Staff at Hyatt: Much more accommodating and cordial than staff at Sheraton. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the staff at Sheraton, but they just didn't seem as on top of it as the staff at Hyatt.
They're both pricey resorts as far as breakfasts and meals and such, but the Hyatt wins hands down for their buffet breakfast at Swan court! It's about $21 p.p. and at the Sheraton is was about $17.95 two years ago!
Also, we were told we would have a $25 per day credit for the Sheraton, but they wouldn't allow us to use that for breakfast, only for lunch and dinner which meant that we would have had to dine there every night, and we didn't want to do that as there are so many other great restaurants in Lahaina!
The Sheraton is much closer to Whaler's village than the Hyatt, but both are walkable! Whaler's Village is 3 hotels down from Sheraton and the Hyatt is several large hotels away, because it takes a while to get out of the Hyatt property because I read that it is 40 acres large!
My husband and I are going back to Maui in April as well, and after a lot of debate (I really wanted to stay at Kaanapali Ali'i again but was not possible) after much debate we're going back to the Hyatt.
We had such a positive experience, and remembering all the friendly staff, we thought we'd go for a mountain view and hope to get a little upgrade!
Also, I e-mailed the Hyatt last week and they replied back that they have just finished remodeling all of the rooms now as of the end of January!
I saw them on their web site which is either maui.hyatt.com or hyatt.maui.com
and click on accommodations, and then click the various arrows to the right and there are five views of newly remodeled rooms. By the way, at the Hyatt a terrace view means a view of the parking lot. (per the hotel)
Sorry for the verbose reply, but wanted to help.

This is for Dana---
Thanks for the Info. we are going to Maui for the 2nd time 1st part of March. This time taking our 2 boys 8 and 10. We stayed at the Alii in 2000 (20th Anniversary) and loved it. But we decided to stay at the Sheraton this time for nicer, calmer beach and bigger pool for the boys. You info. helped make me think we made the right decision between the Hyatt, Sheraton and Westin. We thought the Hyatt was beautiful also put didnt look as kid friendly as the Sheraton. The Westin is nice also but the beach is not as nice as at the Sheraton. I am curious as to how you go about getting a free "Upgrade"? Like you mentioned about the gardenview you have booked at the Hyatt. We have a special ocean view (whatever that means) booked at the Sheraton. Im hoping it is the building that looks over the beach and pool. So it isnt such a long walk to the room for the kids.
Any ideas on how to get a free upgrade at the Sheraton? Thanks again for your info.

Does anyone have advice on how to receive an upgrade at check in. Read post above.
Also, What time does the sunset the 1st part of March on Maui. We arrive at 5:25pm on March 8th and have to drive from airport to Sheraton. About 45min drive. Probably wont arrive until about 7:30pm. Just wondering if we will miss our 1st sunset? Thanks!

We stayed at the Hyatt in Maui 2 years ago and loved it. We vistited most of the major hotels while there and were glad we stayed there. The pools are fabulous. Great restaurants on property and lots of great places to eat on the island. The hotel had a sushi bar that was fantastic! We were treated so well there, the service was excellent.

Hi,
As far as requesting a complimentary upgrade. Here's what I do and I'm frequently successful. I call in advance and just ask nicely to have a note added to my reservation requesting an upgrade "if available" upon check in. Usually, we are having a special event such as an anniversary, birthday, second honeymoon, etc.... If I am a returning guest I tell them that also. I also join all the frequent stay clubs, which also helps. The key is not to demand or expect an upgrade but to just request one politely.

As for the "free" upgrade, we've always been pretty lucky getting bumped up a category or two. Basically, the rule of thumb is don't book any category that you'll truly be disappointed in the event that you don't get upgraded.
This time we've booked a mountain view because the next step up is partial ocean view, and that was approx $600 more! But I won't be terribly disappointed if we actually have to keep the mountain view. Realistically, I think the chances are pretty good to get an upgrade when you don't go during peak season! Non-peak in Hawaii is mid April to beginning of June, and then from Sept 1 to mid December.
Out of all the trips we've been to Hawaii, we've been upgraded I think just about everytime, even when we did go during peak in July once, we were upgraded from partial ocean to ocean front at the Hyatt, but once again, you do have to mention at check-in, "Oh,
by the way, do you HAPPEN to have anything with a such and such view available?" Usually, if not always, they'll try to accommodate you.
When we were upgraded at Hyatt during peak though, I must add that we were getting married on their property and I think that helped, because the guy next to us had paid for a bottom rate room, because I overheard the whole conversation and he was trying to get upgraded to ocean or something, and they wouldn't give it to him but they gave it to us, but once again, we were being upgraded one category.
I sort of think that it's not a huge deal to get upgraded one category or something, but when you pay for the cheapest room, I mean the parking lot view and hope to get upgraded to the ocean front, well, maybe that's just asking too much, but basically you
just have to ask, and very nicely!
I liked the above poster's idea of e-mailing or calling the hotel in advance requesting an upgrade! That's an excellent idea and I'm going to do that as soon as I'm done typing this.
This is for Riggs:
If you already have a special ocean, then you probably don't need the upgrade. My husband and I had special ocean at the Sheraton Maui 2 years ago,
and when we arrived at the hotel I asked them where our room was located and they showed us on the hotel map, but it wasn't ready because we got there early, so I needed to get into a room ASAP because I was ill and then they gave us an ocean view (albeit, Tiny) room which was on the 2nd floor with a balcony that just about hung OVER the beach! It was the most awesome view. We were literally right next to the beach, and had a nice view of the pool and looking south. Total view of all the hotels, the beach, very pleasant. Hmm, the more I think about it maybe we might change from the Hyatt to the Sheraton after all!!
It was a long, long walk to that parking lot though from our room.
If we had kids, we probably would pick the Sheraton too because of its great beach location for snorkeling.
Really though, they were very child friendly when we were at the Hyatt. We've known several people with children that have gone there and they'd really enjoyed it immensely. They do have Camp Hyatt too. I'm not sure if Sheraton has a children's program.
Enjoy!
