Hula Pie???

It`s exactly 12 years since we were on honeymoon in Hawaii - we live in Edinburgh, Scotland. One of our lasting memories was of a dessert served at a chain of restaurants ( the name escapes me now!) called Hula Pie. It was a sharing pudding for two, a huge lump, and I mean huge, of macadamia ice-cream covered in chocolate. As we toured the islands, we would always make sure we visited this chain of restaurant to get our Hula Pie. One place that di serve it was Leolani`s at the Whaler`s Vilage on Ka`anapali.

Has anyone else tried it??

Ah the memories!

Yes, we did and it was, as Billy Crystal would say ...Maaa-vel-ous! Simply Maaa-vel-ous!...as was the onion strings and fish taco (all huge enough to share!)

How about this:

Kimo's Hula Pie

1 (9-inch) chocolate cookie crumb crust
1 quart macadamia nut ice cream, softened
1 (12 ounce) jar hot fudge ice cream topping
1 (8 ounce) container Cool Whip®
1 (3 ounce) jar macadamia nuts, chopped

Fill pie crust with ice cream and re-freeze until firm. To serve, top with fudge, cool whip and sprinkle with nuts.

Those ingredients would make about a quarter of the portions we were served. Somwhere I have a picture of my wife about to tuck into a Hula Pie and it`s a good job I had a panoramic camera!

Fortunately for some of us in CA the restaurants that serve Hula Pie have locations in our state.

In Lake Tahoe Sunnyside Resort is one of them.

In Malibu and Huntington Beach Dukes serves it.

In Del Mar it's Jakes and in La Quinta it's the Cliffhouse.

oooh, I am craving some now. Whenever we are in Kauai, we stay at the Marriott and eat hula pie at Duke's. Even though I can get it here in CA, it tastes MUCH better when eaten in Hawaii

laurenzo, you made me laugh. I feel the same way. There are a few things my family has in Hawaii that even though we can have here (California also), we wait until vacations, no matter how long we have to wait. Hula Pie, Lava Flows, Roys, shave ice, guava juice, are all saved. We made an exception once when my son really wanted to go to Bubba Gumps for his birthday, but later that night he said, " We should have gone to Benihana's, Bubba Gumps taste better in Hawaii."

Bikmom, I forgot about lava flows...my kids loved those (non-alcoholic, of course) and drank them daily while in Hawaii. I didn't realize we did the same thing as you (saving things for vacation) until you mentioned it. It's the same with croissants...just not as good unless eaten in Paris! I think I need a vacation.

laurenzo, my daughter is also a big fan of the non alcoholic lava flows. And since I'm male, you made me laugh with BikMom, but it reminded me why I picked Bikom as my screen name a few years ago. It represents my favorite places in the world:
BI (Big Island)
K (Kauai)
O (Oahu) and
M (Maui)

I need a vacation, too. ALOHA!

ooh, sorry bikom! I was so busy thinking about hula pie and lava flows I didn't pay close enough attention. Now I know I need a vacation! Unfortunately I don't have any to Hawaii planned for the near future
Clever screen name, by the way! My friends just got back from Kauai and I was very envious! I did just buy (w/other couples) a Luau party for 100 at an auction, though. I can pretend

Here's a link to the chain you visited. I love Hula Grill, headed back to Maui next month and will certainly eat there.

Thanks very much for that link - I think we visited nearly every one of those restaurants, scoofing Hula Pie as we went!!

And Belle, you will find Kauai delightful - we have been there twice and are now waiting for the kids to grow up so we can afford to go back - send me a pic of you tackling a Hula Pie!!

This is how we work in Honolulu: I'm sitting in my office with a view of Honolulu Harbor, looking at the tropical fish below, eating a slice of banana pie.

ho, hum. Just another fabulous day in paradise.
