Howard, thanks for Storm King tip

Howard, we had a great weekend upstate NY. We did end up stopping at Storm King. It was a beautiful day, the foliage was gorgeous. I can't wait to see how the pictures turned out. We also went to Olana, Frederick Church's mansion up near Hudson. The view is so absolutely incredible. The house has some beautiful art pieces and collectibles as well. Great time. Marge

YOur welcome, Marge. Let me know when you're going again. The Hudson Valley is treasure trove of things to see and do!

We've made a reservation to stay at the Beekman Arms on the weekend before Christmas. I've heard Mills Mansion has a wonderful Victorian Christmas display. I thought we'd take the train up and rent a car in Rhinebeck this time, instead of renting a car in Brooklyn and driving up. I have to admit I've never driven in the country in the snow before (I'm originally from California). Do you think I should be worried about it? Thanks again. Marge

Minbrooklyn,

I live just north of Rhinebeck. Based upon my experience, you'll definately save money if you can rent a car upstate, rather than in Brooklyn. However, I'm not aware of any rental agency in Rhinebeck, itself. You could check w/ the Beek to see if there is a local agency. If not, I'd suspect the next closest Avis or Hertz agent would be in Poughkeepsie about 15 miles south of Rhinebeck.

Either way, you would need to catch a cab to take you to the agency. The train station for Rhinebeck is actually located in a smaller, adjacent town of Rhinecliff, which is a short 10 minute drive from the Beekman. And, there are no car rental agencys w/in walking distance of the Poughkeepsie train station.

As for the weather, it really depends on your skills and level of confidence. That said, the snow usually doesn't get cranking here until mid-January. We haven't had a real white Christmas for some time. Even in the worst of snows, any of the roads you're likely to travel will be plowed--meaning they are cleared of snow somewhat regularly, not that they are rendered "just wet," as is often the case in NYC.

I wouldn't let your concerns about the weather dissuade you from coming upstate for the holidays. Just remember that the key to driving in the snow (or, ice) is to minimize making any erratic movements, i.e. never slam on the breaks to slow down or cut the wheel too quickly on a turn. If you slow down and stay alert, you'll be fine in the snow.

Good luck.

Marge, BuffaloBill's advice is right on the mark! I would think that the Beekman Arms would be a good source of info about car rentals. Why not call them in advance?
As for the Mills Mansion program, Im not sure, but I bet it's worth seeing. The place is definitely worth a visit. There might other holiday events in some of the other historic sites, such as Montgomery Place, which is close to Rhinebeck. Check out these two websites:

Thanks, Howard and BB. Turns out there is one place in Rhinebeck, a "Rent a Wreck", not sure how literal that is, haven't had a chance to call them yet. Enterprise and possible other rental places in Poughkeepsie will pick up customers at the train station, so that's an option.

Even though I felt nervous about driving in the snow, for some reason I thought Rhinebeck was far enough north to get white Christmases and I was kind of looking forward to that. Hmmm. Think we should wait to get the whole magical snow experience? Waffling on this, as I do think it would be great to be there for the holidays.
