10% for AMTRAK. If you use the train a lot, the savings can easily pay for the AAA membership.

Well, I'll add to the concensus: do join!
I love the free map service, and allother service mentined above. Their service on phone customer service, and speed of tow truck showing up, has imporoved greatly in the last 5 yrs or so, at least in the NoCal region. I'm fortunate to live right near an office. They have loads of detailed city maps, including Portland, Seattle, Hololulu, New York City, IF they don't have it in their office, they'll order it for you.

For me, membership is worth the fee for the tour guides alone.

YES. I've belonged for over 30 years (except when I lived in the UK where I belonged to the RAC) and now I pay for "premium" membership. Very worthwhile if even just for the peace of mind. And besides the travel discounts already mentioned several times - you get discounts at places like Supercuts, Casual Corner, FTD, etc. The discounts are the primary reason I belong - but they are a nice added benefit.

My Dad has been a member for nearly 60 years . . . . .

Ditto to all the above especially razzledazzle. Just this past weekend went to AAA on Saturday (some of their offfices in SoCal are open until 2pm) and not only was able to pay for my car registration and get the new tags right there, but at the same time, picked up new tour books for California and maps for Sonoma County, for our trip in December. 25 year member.

Ditto what djkbooks said. Whenever we travel, I actually like to do a lot of driving through out of the way places. I always get tour books for every state we will be in. I usually try to NOT have a set itinerary, take detours and such. So we don't have any hotel reservations as we start out. During the day we will plan on where we want to stop for the night, then get out the tour book and use our cell phone to see if various places have rooms available. Maybe we are just lucky, but we haven't had to sleep in the car yet.

Makes for a fun trip when you don't know where you are going to end up.

Yes for travel discounts, getting international drivers license with ease, and for breakdowns.
Our experience with road service always great, but maybe we are lucky. Daughter once dropped keys down drain in DC - she was in a safe area so it was ok it took over an hour for them to arrive, but they kept in touch by phone. Driver worked for 20 minutes to try and fish the keys out of the storm drain and save the tow/etc to local car dealership. Didn't work but A for effort. Another time she was lost and got flat tire -she was in questionable area as far as safety - she was explicit with dispatcher where she was, her age, being nervous - dispatcher advised stay in locked car and he would get it done "fast" - immediate call back to her cell and had someone there in under 10 minutes. Offered to stay on phone w/ her but she opted to yak with me instead.
sometimes better discount than other discounts you might have, ask when booking hotel and choose the group (AAA, AARP, Etc) that gives better one. I find card membership worth the price.

I've had AAA for over 25 years and upgraded to "plus" (free towing for like 100 miles or so) after i had to have my car towed from Connecticut to New Jersey 7 years ago. Since then, with 2 teenagers (now men in their 20's) we've had more than our share of dead batteries, flat tires, and broken key lockouts to more than warrant the price of admission. But the best was when, at 2am on a Sat. evening getting a call from younger son he was stalled in the middle of 42nd street in NYC and what should he do??? I told him to call AAA, which he did, they were there in 10 minutes and towed him though the Lincoln Tunnel and all the way to the garage he had asked to be towed to in Northern New Jersey closest to our home, 20 miles from midtown New York. No charge, although my son did tip the guy and pay the toll. So for my money, you really can't go wrong with that kind of protection. Just my humble opinion...........

No question that it's worth it. I've had AAA ever since I got my driver's license and have used it countless time. The AAA rates you get at hotels pays for the fee alone, combine that with the towing and maps/guides/triptiks, and it really is a no brainer.

I agree with Mah1980 totally as long as you don;t mind the fact that some AAA money is routinely used to lobby against the expansion of alternative public transport networks.

Been a member forever, first on my parents membership. Ditto about the good stuff. Also you can go into an office in any state, no matter where your membership is. In Cal, I found out you can also pay a parking ticket. Road service is worth it. The premium means they'll even come and get you on an unpaved road. Love not paying for traveler's checks. City maps are great. Guidebooks are a good starting point for planning a trip.

One caviat, since the days of travel agent's earning commissions from hotels, airlines, etc are long gone, AAA Travel Agency services have added fees--not always clearly disclosed, and you might end up paying more than if you'd booked on your own even where you don't get an AAA discount. There are times when a trip might go wrong and you'll be glad to have a TA to help solve a problem, but if you have a simple itinerary and can make your own reservations direct with hotels, etc, it will probably be cheaper to do so.

Add me to the list of happy campers with AAA.

I've been towed once and had two flats changed by them. Great response times on all occasions. For a woman who often drives alone, it's precious peace of mind to know they're there.

Also, you can get discounts at Petite Sophisticate/Casual Corner, too.

My company provides AAA Plus to all our employees.

It's come in handy for me twice getting towed.

In addition to many of the great perks other posters have mentioned, we use our AAA membership to get discounted movie tickets at our local AAA office. For various theatre chains in our area tix are $5.50 instead of the $9.00 we'd be paying at the movie theatre. Only caveat is that the movie has to be out for 10 days before you can use the discounted tix.

In addition to the Disney ticket discounts the rooms are significantly discounted too. For example, a moderate resort will be reduced from $134/nt to $89/nt, huge savings. But you must call several months in advance to get the AAA rate. You will also receive 10% off in certain Theme park shops and 10% off at Hard Rock Cafe locations including apparel.

I've been a member for many years and I recommend it. However, when I've checked on their prices for travel packages, they have been very high.

Here in California we also get a magazine, I think it is called "Westways." Lots of good travel ideas for the region. I second the opinion that it is invaluable to parents of teen drivers.

AAA has helped with maps and trip tiks, tows, and discounts for hotels, rental car , eyeglasses, movie tickets, Disney tickets (and a special parking lot for members with a pass), retail outlet discounts, tires, as well as the AAA Visa which gives a percentage of cash back for gas purchases. There are other savings, like cell phones -- check AAA.com or your local AAA office as some things may be local or regional (like ski resort discounts).

Should have added the 30% discount at Lensecrafters which has saved me a fortune over the years.

I called them last night when I got a flat in the pouring rain and the guy came and fixed it at midnight. Over the years I've had cars towed many times. Certainly worth it for me.
