Here’s a recipe my kids used on their first boy scout campout.

Camper’s Stew

Frozen hamburger patty
Potato – peeled and sliced about 1/4-1/2” thick
Carrots – peeled and diagonally sliced
Onion slices
Salt and pepper to taste
Ketchup (optional)
Heavy duty aluminum foil

Take some heavy duty aluminum foil and put a FROZEN hamburger in the middle. Add 2-3 potato slices on top. Add several carrots and onions on top. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on top. Now fold the aluminum foil carefully and tightly so that it forms a pocket. You can put this directly into the coals of the fire (don’t need to turn them over, they will steam inside) but be very careful taking them out. You can also put it on the grid over the fire. They will take about 30 minutes or so to cook, depending on the fire. You can add some ketchup just before eating if you like.

These are very good for something so simple; you’ll probably want more than one packet per person.

I like to go camping because the people are friendly, the campfire smells great, nobody cares what time you crack the first beer, but mostly because you haven't lived until you get up in the night and see a million stars reflected on a perfectly still lake.

Camping is fun. Great family time. We've camped with the bears many many times in the Adirondacks. Up there, though, they will break the windows of your car to get at your food. So you have to cover your car with a tarp! Just do whatever they tell you at check-in regarding wild animal control. They know what's needed.

One time we were at 1000 Islands (yuk) camping and there were millions of racoons. Next year - none. Rabies had wiped them all out. Same in the Adirondacks. We used to have tons of racoons at this place where we have rented a cottage (the next step after camping - oh the luxury of running water) for 16 years. Then in about year 4, suddenly there were none. Only last year did I see a racoon again. So, you never know.

I didn't see anybody warn you that if you put your tent on the ground on a tarp, BE SURE THAT THE EDGES OF THE TARP ARE COMPLETELY TUCKED UNDER YOUR TENT. If it isn't, and it rains, it will collect a ton of rainwater between the tarp and the bottom of your tent - the exact opposite of what it is supposed to do.

My dad always dug a moat around the tent with his trusty shovel to catch the run off water.

Reminds me of a camping trip in Rocky Mountain NP. I had gone off in the car to do several loads of laundry. I did not set up camp. When I returned my friend was floating in the little 2 person tent on top of the water filled tarp. I was nice and dry for a few hours - as opposed to absolute, wet misery! I had no idea!

Same trip I made a nasty cut on my thumb with a Swiss Army knife can opener gadget. Same friend pooh-poohed the injury when I thought I needed stitches. Payback?
