how to book a great cruise for a first-timer?

Hello Fodorites!

My boyfriend and I are interested in taking a 3 day or week long cruise to Mexico or the Carribean. Since I've never done a cruise before, do you recommend booking a cruise online? what are some good sites and deals? does it matter which destination or for how long? do windows to the ocean really matter?! Help!

We're thinking about our first cruise too. I suggest you check out the "cruise" forum on this site. There's a lot of good info there!

If you haven't done a cruise before and are not fiscally desperate, book thru a decent cruise oriented travel agent. Also, under the same criteria, GET A BALCONY ROOM!!!!!

There is also a lot of information on the message boards at cruisecritic and cruisemates.

We have found a great combination of service and price at www.makingmemoriestravel.com

I agree with Abram. I read lots of reviews from prior cruisers before making a decsion. I've found Celebrity to be a top-notch crusielines if they offer an itinerary you like. I just returned from a 11-day mediterranean cruise with them; also, did a 7-day western caribbean on Celebrity Century a couple of years ago.
I've used Cruises Only several times. I've done 3 cruises without a window and one with a window -- it didn't really make that much difference because looking out the window is only water. When you come into port it is much nicer up on deck. My two cents.

my recommendation is the diamond princess out of san pedro to mexican riviera...inside cabin is $599/pp plus tips and tours...if you book online make sure they have 800 number and you can talk to real person...i recommend you get good price online and then go to local travel agent and see if they can match price...if they are within $100 then use travel agent since you are newbies and need some advice as to what to expect and do on a cruise...but most of all enjoy... come see some of our pics from our favorite cruises>>
