Hi all! I'm rush-planning a trip to NYC - four nights over the Easter weekend - and trying to find affordable hotels. All the sites say the taxes are not included in the price and I have NO idea of how much they are. Anyone knows? Is it a fixed number or are there 'creative' taxation practices in the city?

New york City hotel taxes are 13.5%.

The 13.5% percent is on top of the sales tax of 8.25%.

This high tax has long been a subject of concern for those who want to produce conventions in NYC (along with the high cost of constructing an exhibit.) But with the hotel room occupancy rate somehwere around 87% the politicans could care less.

Hotel room rates are subject to applicable state and local tax, 13.375% plus $3.50 per room occupancy tax. You do not pay any additional sales tax on top of that.

Let's not overstate the extortionate taxes. There's a 13.375% tax plus another $3.50 per night. Sales tax would just be rubbing it in.

If you add 15% to prices you should be about right.
