How much does vacation normally cost?
Just curious, for all you travelers, how much does your average vacation normally cost you? It seems like some people take more than 1 vacation per year which can be quite expensive. I know I can only afford 1 trip per year. Our vacation for me & misses, averages around $1800-$2000 per year. This includes car rentals, food, shopping,
spending money etc...

I also am on a budget. I can do more than one trip a year because I look for the deals. Priceline, Hotwire, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc. I use my AAA discount when I can.
I also get lots of advice from people on this website which save me money.
For airfare, travelocity has a fare tracker where I can put in up to five places I want to go, and they e-mail me when the price goes down. That allowed me to travel roundtrip LAX to Austin $160 and LAX to New Orleans for $177.50.

This question has been asked here several times before.
The key is to remember that incomes vary greatly and vacation allowances avry greatly, so no surprise about the big range in vacation budgets.
Several people who answered last time indicated that they spend $25,000-35,000 per year on travel.
Several have 6-9 weeks of vacation.

$1000 per day, for a family of 5 sounds high, but not unreasonable. For the family to sleep comfortably, you would need 2 rooms or a suite, there are airline tickets to buy, a rental car, 3 meals per day per person, is 15 meals, and then there are the entrance fees to museums, Disney, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, etc. So, although it is on the high side, it is not unreasonable.
By the way, $1000 per day is way out of my budget. I travel off season, and try to budget $100 per day, including airfare, food, lodging, and entrance fees. I try not to rent a car when I am on vacation.

I consider travel as much or more educational that what my kids will learn in a geography class. When the rubber meets the road and your at the end of your life, all you really have are memories. You can't take it with you.
10K is a hell of a lot (to me) to spend on a vacation but I have been reasonably successful in business and consider the money I spend on my family with travel and investment in memories.
I've travelled on a hell of a lot less too. My wife and I had some great times camping in a pup tent prior to the kids arriving.

i like to do the all-inclusives. i live in vancouver, canada so our dollar doesn't go very far in the u.s. so i go a/i to mexico for about 1100.00 and this is all i'll spend for food, drinks, water-sports and i'll know what i spent before i go. happy travels to all!!

We, husband & 2 1/2yr old, spent $4,500 for 10 days in Daytona Beach and Disneyworld this June. Airfare was free (flyer miles) so we upgraded at WDW to Polynesian resort. We take a big trip every 12 - 18mos. (1999 Hawaii, 2001 Gr Cayman) And take 2 or 3 short trips each year, skiing, Palm Springs at about $600-$800 each.

I shoot for $150 per person per day with three people for airfare and hotel -- usually including breakfast. Sometimes we'll go a little higher, but not often. We can usually do very well with that and we don't stay in low-end places, either. Most of our vacations are not in the U.S., but we do some 2- or 3-nighters domestically. The deals are there for people who know what they're looking for, plan their trips wisely and book things opportunistically. (Hint: before the end of November, you should have your spring break locked in.) With travel, you can either pay attention and get values when they are there -- or you can just PAY.

Lets do the math on your nine day vacation: $1,800.00/9 = $200.00 per day. Assuming that you are a family of four since you said "kids", that equates to $50.00 per day per person.
Allocating $100.00 per day for two hotel rooms (which is very, very questionable) leaves $100.00 per day split 4 ways or $25.00 per day per person for recreation and eats.
Splain to me exactly what you did on this trip. I can't see a hell of a lot of money left for anything other than gas and food.

I tailor our vacation destinations to how much disposable income we may have in any given year (what goes in the "vacation account"). Some years bonuses, income tax refund, and no large or unexpected bills allow us to plan a "big" vacation ($2000-$4000). Other years, I can only find $500-$700 to allow for travel, and we plan a closer, more budget-minded kind of trip.
But that's okay - we get a wider variety of travel experiences to remember this way. In '97 we saw Utah and Arizona camping out of the back of the minivan; in '01 we spent 10 glorious days on Oahu. And every trip, no matter what the budget, has been rewarding and fun.....

Our last trip averaged $83 per day on our 5 week camping trip for two adults. Our biggest expense (and usually half of our expense) is gas. We traveled around 7,500 miles from the west coast to South Carolina and back.
When we were a family of four the cost were about the same. Just a little more food was purchased. We always buy a National park Pass that is good for one year.
We will be taking another 2 week vacation later this year but will stay closer to home.
