From the time I was 10, we spent summer vacations traveling the U.S. by station wagon. By the time I was 13, I had visited by car Mexico, Canada, and every state except Alaska and Hawaii. I am now 48.

Wow. What a surprise to see my thread again!
Now I'm at 47 states. We managed to visit Mississippi, briefly (lunch in Corinth), last December. I was in Huntsville, AL, within a few hours of Mississippi, so I just had to plan a day trip over the border.
ND, HI, AK remain.....

27 plus DC, but I don't count the ones I stayed overnight in while driving across the country. I guess my rule is 2 or more nights, OR seeing/doing something significant while there. Motel-by-the-highway for 10 hours doesn't count for me.

For me, it's 47 but I will have had feet on the ground in all fifty before the end of the year. I'm still lacking Connecticut and Rhode Island, both of which I'll visit in mid-July on a genealogical research trip. Then, I'll only have North Dakota left and I plan to do a road trip in September that will allow me to cross that one off the list.
I've also had the good fortune to visit 20 other countries and independent islands and, hopefully, I haven't finished with that list yet, either.

North Dakota was my FIRST state, as I was born there. I left at age 10 and have now seen all states except AK, ID, and OR. Recently, I took my own children through there and I highly recommend the Medora musical in the western part of the state called the Badlands. It's a great trip when combined with Mount Rushmore.
