I just cancelled my flight to Atlanta for myself and my daughter scheduled for October 5th. I'll have to pay American Airlines $100.00 change fee to travel a later date but just didn't really feel comfortable enough to travel this soon.

I guess I should preface this by saying that, "when it's your time to go, it's your time." I've heard SO many stories of people who did or didn't get on the doomed flights due to bizarre circumstances. Like two best friends who had to be separated because of no more seats on the flight (something like that). They each ended up going from Boston to L.A. on EACH of the planes that hit EACH building. AMAZING.

So, having said that, I will fly in December anyway. I must admit though, that, like many other travelers, I WILL check people out to see if I get a "gut" feeling on any.

Call me patriotic or just plane not adventurous, but I have never left this country for a vacation, and never will. This country is so absolutely breathtaking from sea to shining sea, that there are not enough days in the year to visit every city, town and state each with its distinctive beauty. I'll take the USA AnyDAY! gOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!!!!!!

Logic would dictate that now, and the next couple months will be the SAFEST time to fly..security is stronger than ever...it could become lax 6 mos to a year from now, as has happened in the past, but if you are worried, NOW, imo is the time to go..just mo.

Paige, who wrote above, the airlines are saying that they are NOT charging the change fee right now, due to the concerns of fliers, due to reports on tv and radio. ASK again and tell them you are cancelling due to the stuff that is going on.

My husband and I live in Ottawa, Canada and are booked on Northwest Airlines to go to San Francisco Friday Sept 21. We're having a really hard time deciding what to do! Part of me wants to go to show the terrorists that their scare tactics won't work - that we will not be intimidated by their threats.

We've also been loooking forward to going to SF all summer - we've never been but we hear its an amzing city!!!

But, on the other hand, I'm really nervous about travelling right now. I'm concerned about being out of the country if the US and its Allies take military action against the terrorists in Afghanistan -- who knows how many other terrorists may be living among us in the US and Canada, willing to go into action at a moments notice??? I'd like to give our police and intelligence forces some time to root out as many terrorists in hiding as possible.

Northwest is also not back to full capacity yet so there are no guarantees that our flight won't be cancelled at the last minute.

This is such a tough decision!!!

TG, no one can tell you your fears are irrational ... but if you give in now and stay home, will it be more or less fearful next time? Perhaps you need to get over the hump of fear and see SF. It's plain to see the terrorists have impact in many, many facets of our lives. I hope you go to SF and have a good time. I can see bin Laden right now ... down somewhere in a dirty hole, hiding out. That's his way of life. I'm glad we don't have to do the same. Ciao

i normally find "Al's" posts insightfule; but in this case I'm not sure what he was trying to say and appears to be off base. I cancelled because I was not in the "mood" for a vacation (referring to a 2 week trip to France, and not an overnighter somewhere close). Does that make me a sugar candy American?...I think not.

I want to take a trip to Paris for Thanksgiving but I don't want to put my family under stress. So I so very disappointed will probably join the ranks. UGH!!! I got such a good fare. If I can find a way to lie about my where abouts and go down a weekend before I will still hit the Champs-Élysées. I suppose we will be striking and creating more havic further diminishing my hopes. Ok even I am seeing how so very self centered this is. This is all like a bad dream.

I am sitting in a webcafe on Pier 39 in San Francisco as I write this. This is our last of our 9 days here. We still have three weeks to continue our summer long driving trip in the US, returning to Florida. I have never seen Fisherman's Wharf so deserted. It is clear that tourists are staying away by the thousands. I'm not sure how I'd feel if we were traveling by plane, but we intend to continue our trip as planned heading now for Yosemite tomorrow, followed by Death Valley, then Las Vegas, Zion and Bryce, Aspen, Denver, and Kansas City. We are to be joined in Las Vegas next Saturday by two Florida friends flying in from Florida. We are concerned about their three (yes, three) connecting flights to get from Ft. Myers to Las Vegas on American, but in checking their same flights for today, we are pleased to see that the first flight actually left and arrived 10 minutes early, the second one was about 40 minutes late arriving in Dallas, and the third flight left Dallas about 1 hour behind schedule. I think that is absolutely amazing in light of what is going on.
We need to continue if possible with travel plans and other spending plans. Our economy and the fate of the airlines is suffering enough!

Like everyone else, I am struggling with "go or not to go" I will be traveling on business in the coming weeks so long as our company lifts its current travel ban and flying to Atlanta and Arizona on separate trips from the east coast. But my struggle is my family trip to Disney in early November. Too far to drive, but I don't want to put my 3-year old in harm's way nor do i want to disappoint her with somewhat irrational fears. Not looking for an answer because only I can do that...just posting to participate.

Friend coming from Denver to Tampa this weekend finally made their decision: they will cancel. Their children do not want them to go.

Meeting these same friends in November, with our families, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. We are all determined NOT to cancel!

My husband will go to Hong Kong next month on business (I had never planned to go) and my son will go to NYC for a family visit then also. I think we should make a distinction between being afraid to fly (never, it's probably best right now) and lacking the will to enjoy the trip and have a good time (I certainly can understand this!) So, everyone must decide for himself. If you would be able to enjoy the trip and not worry about those you leave behind or other new security procedures, then I say go. If you're feeling down and don't think you'd be able to have fun, I would cancel. It doesn't sound as if this war is going to be a spectacular attack, but instead will be long and commando style. God help us. I hope good will prevail.

We are going ahead and going on our planned vacation the end of October. I'm not giving in to those evil %?x#@x.
Besides, I find myself more at risk of being hurt or killed in car accidents everyday (especially the way people are driving now) than being killed by terriosts in the airplane. I still feel more safer flying than driving...

We are leaving for San Diego (from Atlanta) tomorrow night. Me, my husband, and my husband's sister. Me, I am ready to get out of town, terrorists or not, my husband is going to see Tony Gwynn play some of his final baseball games, terrorists or not and my husbands sister is going but we bought the hotel room off of Hotwire and she cannot get her money back! The only thing that could stop us, other than a terrorist, is my husband (a reservist) being called to active duty! Al, we are definitely NOT made of sugar candy. I told my husband's sister she had just as much chance of dying on I-75 in Atlanta driving to work everyday as she did getting on a hijacked airplane and to get over it!

Cancelled long-awaited hiking trip to Italy. As a single parent with two young children, just couldn't bring myself to go to a place from which I couldn't get home quickly if I needed to - my primary consideration. Going hiking in the Shenandoahs instead. Sounds nice.

We've been working on a trip in spring 2002 for my husband's entire family to go to Yellowstone following a successful 2001 trip to southern Utah, northern Arizona. After reviewing the posts here, I know it will be a tough sell among many family members who have never flown or who rarely fly. But by cracky, we will go & I will plant a flag out there in a beautiful soaring space, say a prayer for those who have fallen, and shoot the proverbial bird at bin Laden. Dang it, this is OUR country!
