If there is little traffic and no snow it will take you about 2 to 2/12 hours depending on how you drive.

What mjs is saying under near perfect conditions but why "zip" thru the Sierra? Beautiful country and some nice stops along the way.

Hi janisj!

About 125 miles (give or take 20 miles depending where you are going in Sacramento)

The drive time depends a LOT on day of week and time of year.

For instance, on a Sunday afternoon in summer or during ski season it can easily take 4 or 5 hours or more. On a Tuesday morning in April - about 2 hours.

So when is this trip?

I thought you were going to a wedding in Tahoe. You don't have to go through Reno to get to Tahoe from Sacramento. Where in Tahoe is the wedding?

In your other post, you said you're going to Lake Tahoe? It's a little closer than Reno, and if you're going to South Lake Tahoe area, you'll be taking US50 rather than I-80.

OK - this is confusing - it looks like you mean driving from Sacramento to Tahoe (instead fo Reno to Tahoe). So what is it you are really trying to do?

It does make a difference - North shore, south shore, day of week, time of day, etc. Give us details - it is really hard to give good advice w/ just a part of the picture . . . . .

(BTW - if the drive is from SMF to Tahoe on a Friday afternoon - all bets are off re the drive time. Just getting across to the east side of Sacramento county from SMF could easily be an hour)

Here's a suggestion:

www.mapquest.com
maps.yahoo.com
www.maps.google.com
Click on driving directions, then put in your starting location and your ending location. Click "get directions" and the directions, mileage, and estimated travel time will magically appear.

If you have further questions about which is the better route, best times to travel, road closures, etc., the good folks on this board can give you plenty of reliable information.

(Except Kal, of course. But he has some great one-liners. )

Unfortunately, the drive times on most websites are next to useless for this route. SMF to Reno or Tahoe is extremely dependent on the day of the week, time of day, and month. For instance at 10:00 a.m. on a friday you might have clear sailing and by 2:00 p.m. it is bumper to bumper on the main routes through Sac/Placer/El Dorado counties.

I am going to a wedding in Lake Tahoe. It is the south lake part (i guess) Zephyr Cove Area? Any driving suggestion from Sac airport or should we fly to reno?

It's much closer to fly into Reno. Zephyr Cove is in Nevada, on the east side of the lake, not really south.

OK - that helps - zephyr cove. Now, what day of the week are you arriving?

As ag3046 says - Reno is much, much closer than Sacramento. If you can get much lower fare - it might make sense to fly into SMF. But definitely not if you are arriving on a Friday afternoon or over a holiday.

That's up to you. As we've said, Reno is MUCH closer. I'd only fly into SMF if the fare and/or connections were a lot better.

Hmm....I gave you the easiest solutions before. Fly into Reno. If you need a cheap flight check out Southwest Air. Not that difficult, really.

Here's an idea. Why not fly into Reno?
