How Far From Sacremento to Reno?

I posted earlier about airfare from New England to Reno... Cany someone please tell me how far Sacremnto is from Reno. On a map it looks fairly close.

If there is little traffic and no snow it will take you about 2 to 2/12 hours depending on how you drive.

Kal Mar 23rd, 2007 12:39 PM

What mjs is saying under near perfect conditions but why "zip" thru the Sierra? Beautiful country and some nice stops along the way.

Hi janisj! ;;)

janisj Mar 23rd, 2007 12:46 PM

About 125 miles (give or take 20 miles depending where you are going in Sacramento)

The drive time depends a LOT on day of week and time of year.

For instance, on a Sunday afternoon in summer or during ski season it can easily take 4 or 5 hours or more. On a Tuesday morning in April - about 2 hours.

So when is this trip?

I thought you were going to a wedding in Tahoe. You don't have to go through Reno to get to Tahoe from Sacramento. Where in Tahoe is the wedding?

rkkwan Mar 23rd, 2007 01:02 PM

In your other post, you said you're going to Lake Tahoe? It's a little closer than Reno, and if you're going to South Lake Tahoe area, you'll be taking US50 rather than I-80.

janisj Mar 23rd, 2007 01:18 PM

OK - this is confusing - it looks like you mean driving from Sacramento to Tahoe (instead fo Reno to Tahoe). So what is it you are really trying to do?

It does make a difference - North shore, south shore, day of week, time of day, etc. Give us details - it is really hard to give good advice w/ just a part of the picture . . . . .

(BTW - if the drive is from SMF to Tahoe on a Friday afternoon - all bets are off re the drive time. Just getting across to the east side of Sacramento county from SMF could easily be an hour)

Hi, Kal :)

Here's a suggestion:

www.mapquest.com
maps.yahoo.com
www.maps.google.com
Click on driving directions, then put in your starting location and your ending location. Click "get directions" and the directions, mileage, and estimated travel time will magically appear.

If you have further questions about which is the better route, best times to travel, road closures, etc., the good folks on this board can give you plenty of reliable information.

(Except Kal, of course. But he has some great one-liners. ;) )

LOL LVK welcome to the klub!

:-O

Unfortunately, the drive times on most websites are next to useless for this route. SMF to Reno or Tahoe is extremely dependent on the day of the week, time of day, and month. For instance at 10:00 a.m. on a friday you might have clear sailing and by 2:00 p.m. it is bumper to bumper on the main routes through Sac/Placer/El Dorado counties.

I am going to a wedding in Lake Tahoe. It is the south lake part (i guess) Zephyr Cove Area? Any driving suggestion from Sac airport or should we fly to reno?

Ag3046 Mar 23rd, 2007 03:18 PM

It's much closer to fly into Reno. Zephyr Cove is in Nevada, on the east side of the lake, not really south.

janisj Mar 23rd, 2007 04:59 PM

OK - that helps - zephyr cove. Now, what day of the week are you arriving?

As ag3046 says - Reno is much, much closer than Sacramento. If you can get much lower fare - it might make sense to fly into SMF. But definitely not if you are arriving on a Friday afternoon or over a holiday.

bhonoreh Mar 24th, 2007 04:24 AM

we can go any day of the week the wedding is on a friday..we thought we would go wednesday to wednesday. So we should fly to Reno?

janisj Mar 24th, 2007 06:16 AM

That's up to you. As we've said, Reno is MUCH closer. I'd only fly into SMF if the fare and/or connections were a lot better.

trippinkpj Mar 24th, 2007 08:14 AM

I would fly to Reno myself. So much easier a drive. :-)

TTess Mar 24th, 2007 09:48 PM

Hmm....I gave you the easiest solutions before. Fly into Reno. If you need a cheap flight check out Southwest Air. Not that difficult, really.

NeoPatrick Mar 25th, 2007 04:12 AM

Here's an idea. Why not fly into Reno?
