How "dressed up" should we be for a Broadway Show?

Normally we're in NYC during the late spring or summer. I learned long ago that a jacket is just too warm in the theatres -- despite the fact I always preferred to dress up for Broadway. When we went for a week in February last year (during record cold), I thought it would be great to wear jacket and often tie to the theatre. But what I found out was, they crank up the heat so much -- the theatres were even hotter than they are in the summer.
I've never understood the idea that public spaces will cool a place down in summer when people are wearing light clothes way below what they heat it up to in the winter while people are wearing heavy clothes. Who decided that was a good idea? Obviously not someone with a sense of energy conservation.
