How does one pronounce Tribeca?

Hope you can help, people. I'll be staying in the Tribeca area of New York in a few weeks and I'd love to know the correct way of pronouncing this name. I'm not a moron, just English and anxious to get things right and not have cab drivers laugh at me. Is it Tri-bee-ca or just plain Tri-beck-a? I suspect the former, knowing it's short for Triangle Below Canal Street, but I'd love some confirmation. Thanks in advance. Also if anyone can give any comments on the place I'll be staying at, the Cosmopolitan Hotel, I'd be most grateful.

If you really want to impress people and sound like a real local, use the correct NYC pronunciation for Houston St.

It is pronounced "Houseton St." and not like the city in Texas.

Have a great time!

Why pronounce it properly? Many of the cab drivers don't. Start a new trend and call it "Trib-ick-uh" accent on the first syllable.

"Try-beck-uh" is the correct way to say it, with the accent on the second syllable.

Be sure to pronounce the island "Minnhatt'n" also. If they hear "man" in the first syllable, they'll know you're a rube.

It's tri-BECK-ah, but you can call it anything you want. tri-BEE-cah works for me.

I always call HOUSE-ton HEW-ston just to piss people off.

By the way, before you ask, it's pronounced MAY-cees, not MOCK-ees.
