Would like to hear from someone who knows how I can get from my hotel to Farmingdale for an early morning appointment. Then from Farmingdale to the U.S. Open. Got great information yesterday for the rest of my family to go direct to the tennis match. Thank you fodor poster.

You can get to Farmingdale by taking the LIRR at Penn Station. Penn Station is on 34th street and 7th avenue. If you go up to the information desk, they can tell you which line you have to take and it's the farmingdale stop. I hope this helps.

Farmingdale is on the Ronkonkoma line; here's a link for schedules and fares if you like:

Take the Ronkonkoma line to the Farmingdale station; make sure you don't take an express train that bypasses that station (that info is available in Penn Station on the board by the track entrance). From the Farmingdale station, if you need a taxi, you can call 516 249-1212. Don't forget to buy your train ticket at Penn Station; the LIRR will charge you $3 more if you buy the ticket on the train.

Farmingdale to US Open:
Take the LIRR train from Farmngdale back toward NYC, but get off at Woodside in Queens (this is after Jamaica, between Jamaica and Penn Station). You may have to change at Jamaica to be sure to get a train that stops at Woodside. At Woodside, change to the #7 train, the "subway" (which is elevated here); take the train in the direction of Flushing, and get off at Willets Point-Shea Stadium.
You could also switch at Woodside to another LIRR train that goes to Shea (Port Washington branch), but the connections would probably be bad. The #7 train runs more frequently.

In a perfect world, it might take half and hour to 40 minutes. But you are talking about an area of NYC featuring some of the most congested highways. The tennis center is next to Shea Stadium which is next to LaGuardia airport and also near the major routes to access JFK Airport, the Triboro Bridge, and a few other bridges and tunnels. With the addition of tennis traffic, it could take twice as long and also be very pricey. You'd probably have to arrange such a lengthy taxi (probably private car service) ahead of time.
