Saw a similar thread on Paris and I wanted say. It could be worse, you could miss a good place LIKE HAWAII!! Just kidding.

Anyone else have a hard time being away from Hawaii? Probably all in my head! On every trip I take anywhere I think about how I could be going back to Hawaii. I have tickets to Paris in November. Its a trip I have been excited about for a month and I was just in Hawaii for a month this summer. Still there I was online today looking at booking options too Hawaii that would cancel out Paris. Whales go to Hawaii in winter, I wanta see that. ...miss it for that pesky skiing I do in the icy NE each year. Oh yeah and then there is that pesky work!

What do you do when you can't get to Hawaii? Order Lion's coffee online? Zippy's for lunch. get a lei and send it to your self.LOL Pikaki does not travel so well. Its not even staying alive in my soap!

Not in California, its not a hop skip and a jump. If we get Hawaiian music here its a once or twice a year event.

Anyone else have strategies that keep them Hawaii happy on the mainland?

How'd you do that matnikstym?

My dream is part of the year in the North East and part of the year in Hawaii. Just don't know what to reach for in the way of a career that would accomodate that.

What is your secret Mat

no kids, no wife, no bills-came at the right time, bought a house for $50k on 1 acre of land outside Hilo. decided would live on what I make (1/3 of wages made in california when I left) and made the best of it. after work-the beach, days off-the beach, more than made up for not having the best or the newest. not a lot of keeping up with the jones's over here so you can live cheaply here if you choose. would i go back? NEVER!!

Man, I'm sitting here munching on a guava and a passion fruit from someone's yard here and thinking, "What would I do?"

There are pockets of transplanted Hawaii residents all over the US. Like, the first weekend in June, all the transplanted Hawaii residents in New York go to Central Park for a big picnic/luau. Cecelio and Kapono go on a live concert tour on the mainland every year, too. If you can find the Hawaii people, you can find out about more events in your area.

When I left Hawaii in 1967 I thought I would never survive but have managed to do so.

I am certain there are some aspects to island life that are rarely spoken of such as pests (i.e., cockroaches), not being able to readily cross the state line, high food costs, etc., not to mention the ridiculous pet quarantine that was in exisitence for decades but only for animals from certain regions.

On the more jamed positive side there is the great weather and more or less laid back attitude and I guess that's why i enjoy going back so often, as in this coming Christmas and New Years.

And yes, there is much more to Hawaii than Maui, thank God.

Mahalo!

My husband and I lived on Oahu for a year and have been back on the Mainland for a little more than a year. Every time I miss Hawaii I compare the size of the dinky apartment we were renting for as much as our mortgage on our house is now (with our house being three times the size!), or while I'm attending a concert (a favorite pasttime of mine) I remember how NO bands ever go to Hawaii. It also took us about 8 months to finally get all our utilities shut off and accounts closed because if you think the bureaucracy at the power company on the Mainland is frustrating, imagine the bureaucracy at a power company, or phone or cable, on island time.

I crack up when I read threads here by people planning their "one and only trip to Hawaii". HA!

I survive by constantly planning trips there. I am skipping 2006 (like you I am excited about the other destinations I will be visiting) but I am anxious as hell to start making arrangements for the next trip to the islands. I am beginning to think that we should try to squeeze a "little" visit in there somewhere in 2006 maybe. After almost 30 years of visits you would think that I would be satisfied...but NO!

Yes, I know the quarantine was finally lifted and as you undoubtedly know it was in existence for decades.

A few years ago we were in Waikiki and we saw a woman walking her dog. As you might imagine, I approached her and admiring the dog mentioned the dreaded quarantine. Her response was interesting: "Oh, that wasn't for this dog since we moved here from Australia. We've been trying for a long time to get the quarantine stuff eliminated for all pets."

This is a fun thread thanks for the indulgence.

MELISSAH!!! WERE YOU REALLY EATING BACKYARD GUAVA? I laughed out loud in my office when I read that one. RUB IT IN WHY DON'T YOU LOL.

We had a banana tree in our backyard.

Matnikskyn...sounds great! I have no spouse or kids either, still hard to leave life here. Easier to make it here being the huge factor as well as life long friends. Would love to hear more about your journey there. Isn't Hilo really shaping up? I just love what they have done to that waterfront area with all the shops and restaurants. ...

MerryTravel I live with similar space problems already in NYC. and the bands??? ...well since I largely listen to Hawaiian music geek that I am, I am always waiting for them to come to NYC. I even emailed one musician to come. Glad you are happy with the transition back though.

IAMQ you make me feel sane lol. I look at I am missing Paris posts and I think to myself let me just write "SNAP OUT OF IT". Then I think about my own little Hawaii habit and I know I have no room to talk. WOW you have been doing this for 30years? Different place each time or do you know one island like home? What do your trips look like after 30 years?

Sarah I hope you get bitten by the Paris bug!!!

We've been twice at Christmas time..cold, misty rain often, often gray but SO romantique, even more so perhaps at that season and in that weather! Picture walking across the plaza toward Notre Dame Christmas Eve, the bells tolling, everyone else bustling toward the church, light mist falling and lit by the lights on the church. Picture packing in, everyone dressed in overcoats (so I was living in FL and that was pretty wonderful to me . It is SO fabulous that I'm almost afraid to go back when the weather is pretty, sunny and warm, worried that I'll miss the romance of the other season!!

OK...now you can tell me to SNAP OUT OF IT! LOL Write us when you get back though, will you?

OH...I've been to Maui and had a great time...that was 83 and I think I'd be afraid to see it now.

Just to clarify, quarantine has not truly been eliminated for everyone. My understanding of the current rules is that Hawaiian pets are now allowed to leave and re-enter when certain procedures are followed. For non-Hawaiians, if you get the bloodwork in to the lab more than 120 days before your arrival, you qualify for the "five days or less" quarantine. However, we only found out 93 days before our move that we were going to Hawaii, so we just barely made it to qualify for the 30-day quarantine.

merrytravel- fyi: the eagles are playing 3 nights concert on oahu in december, motley cru coming also. janet jackson a few years back, elton john, gloria estafan, rolling stones even have played here. jimmy buffet annually usually at least 1 "famous" group a year. to fill in the gaps we go to willie k., hapa, kealii reichel, amy hanalii gilliom concerts. and of course the merrie monarch every year, but i gotta go....loco moco waiting!

Mat keakei Reichel is who I emailed to come to NYC. and floored to get an email back not once but twice!!! I emailed a come to NYC request twice now, lol.

Yeah I think if you really embrace the music culture in Hawaii....LONG TRADITION, you are not really following the mainland music scene...But perhaps that is an old fuddy duddy response.

Hate crowded concerts me entire life. Jack Johnson is from Hawaii he does well on the mainland. I do see him playing in Hawaii off and on if you follow what is in at the blaisdale.

Symphonies do come to Hawaii along with foreign ballets, operas etc.. I was going to get tickets for friend to see Marcel Marseau (sp) legendary French mime.

Forget about ticketed performances though Willie Nelson, Grahm Nash and others have homes on Kauai. I remember strolling through the Marriot and seeing Graham Nash playing and singing to a group of 20 outside.

well long story short I did not miss the concert thing. I don't expect any city to compete with NYC in this aspect.

Yes! I sure was eating a backyard guava and a backyard lilikoi. I think I would miss the food the most.

I know a German couple who moved all the way to rural Kona and haven't looked back at all. They drive a truck, share a cel phone, and enjoy outdoor Hawaii living. Last year, I showed them my camera cel phone. They marveled at it, then the husband nudged the wife and giggled, "Vee ahr dee heelbillies!"

Melissa-

I know what you mean about the groups of locals now living on the mainland - somehow they always find each other.

When I lived in San Antonio, I had just transferred to a store in Helotes, which is up a bit north. One day this woman rushes up to me and announces "I heard you were here!" - turns out she was a Hawaii transplant and the ambassador of their Hawaii group sent to welcome me. It was a little bizarre how she knew I was from Hawaii - but it was a word of mouth thing, apparently.

Anyway, I can attest that these groups are more than welcoming to another of their own. They're also a good source when your stash of arare or cuttlefish is gone.

Sarah,

Four years ago I "discovered" Kaua'i and have gone every year since then for around two weeks. Silly me for waiting that long. What was I thinking? I'd like to go for 3 or 4 weeks next time. The longer the better. Instead of doing tours and moving around a lot, I like to go to Makua Beach and be a beach slug all day, every day.

Ahhhh....

Hi Bill,

There is a Makua on Oahu this is not the beach you are talking about is it?

Love Makua on Oahu but where is this on the big island, assuming this is where you are?
