hotwire for hotel

Has anyone ever used Hotwire to book a hotel?
I just found a 4 1/2 star in NYC for 140,
sounds too good to be true. They don't tell
you the hotel until you book, so I was just
wondering if anyone has used this and what
they got for their money. Please let me know
Laure.

Depends on what you're expectations are.
First question you have to ask yourself: if it's REALLY a great hotel, why are they having to make deals with cut rate outfits like Hotwire or Priceline. You never see the real top end hotels show up. The best ones are just large business hotels like Hiltons and such. Which may be a great deal overall. But I think some people think they're going to find the Four Seasons at the end of the search.
Won't happen.
But if you're not all that picky, Hotwire can be a great deal.

Check out www.biddingfortravel.com which mostly focuses on Priceline. Maybe you should try bidding on Priceline up to $140, then you could save even more money (if successful). Also, read on the above board, you'll see the differences between the "star" ratings between Priceline and Hotwire.

Hi, Laure.
Sorry to barge in, but I am also interested in that Hotwire hotel. If you decide to book I would really appreciate it if you posted what hotel you got. Thanks.

I use hotwire lots. We got the Waldorf Astoria the end of July for $127. Just booked Detroit to Frankfurt for mid-May for $573.

I used Hotwire for a last-minute trip to Pittsburgh and got quoted a room rate of $64 for a downtown hotel. Didn't expect much but ended up at the Omni and I would definitely say that I was pleased. Checked the major sites like Expedia, Lodging.com and Travelocity to name a few and the best rate I saw for the Omni was $119 a night. My advice...Check out the hotels and rates in the area on one of those kind of sites and then check what Hotwire is offering. Hotwire lists their partners on their site so when I was quoted for a downtown four-star hotel, I was fairly certain that it was for either the Omni or the Wyndham...Good luck but make sure to check the area map on Hotwire as well to guarantee that you will end up in an area you want to be in!

I've had more or less fabulous luck recently with Hotwire.com. The star ratings, I've found, are "fairly" accurate. Last summer in Boston we were booked into the Back Bay Hilton on one visit, with the same number of "stars" granted the Doubletree which I, personally, would have granted one star less some weeks later. All in all, though, for those rates, to me, you really can't go wrong. We acquired a magnificent room in Baltimore in September in October through Hotwire. While it renders me enormously nervous not knowing the specific hotel before paying, the difference in price surely makes up for parking, taxi fares, etc., during your visit, and several blocks removed from a slightly more convenient location... So far, we've never been whopping disappointed booking through Hotwire. There is no question but that huge hotels sell many rooms to Hotwire and HotelDiscout. Over Christmas, we booked the Algonquin at $129/night some months ago. Just beore leaving, Hotwire didn't come even close, Hoteldiscount had rooms at same for $149/night and the Algonquin website declared no rooms available for those dates. Really, you must shop like the dickens...and know what you're doing.
