Well, I am one that is quite happy with today's hotels. Compared to hotels say 5-6 years ago, they have bigger TV, much nicer beds and beddings, nicer amenities. Also, complimentary upgrades are still possible, and often one can get a room on dedicated "frequent guest" floor with just a basic card.

I am mostly surprised by the Hilton part...
Must be due to the high performance of Hilton brands like Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn and the like.
I find that Hilton flagged properties are incredibly inconsistant.

I'm surprised about Hilton as well. They are truly inconsistent and we try to avoid them whenever possible.
