We are looking for accommodation in the above for July 2007. 4 days in either before & after an Alaskan cruise. Never been to either city before. Prefer hotels in busy areas near restuarants,pubs,theatres,attractions,etc (like Times Sq NYC)Comp.Breakfast would be great. around $200

We stayed at the Hotel Le Soleil in Vancouver. It's a suite hotel, beautifully decorated, very clean, excellent service. We paid $202CAD per night. It's on Hornby, about a five minute walk from Robson Street (the major downtown 'go to' street) and, in the other direction, five minutes from the harbour where the Alaskan cruise ships are docked.

We got the Hotel Vintage Park in Seattle on Priceline for about $175/night. Great location, and we were really happy with the hotel and the room.

A word of note: when looking you'll find the Vancouver Hotels seem to be comparatively more expensive than the Seattle ones. Don't forget to convert to US dollars and then they'll seem more reasonable. And also you can get your tax back you spend on Canadian Hotels.

We love the Wedgewood in Vancouver. They probably don't even book this far ahead, but if you book early you might get a rate that will be about $200 US. We did. It's a deluxe boutique hotel in a great location.

Many options in Seattle, but our favorite now (and in your budget) is the Hotel Andra.

We have stayed at the Hotel Andra in Seattle and the Pacific Palisades in Vancouver and would return to both.
The Andra had just be renovated and it was hopping. It is located conveniently to downtown and the market.
At the Palisades, which is a Kimpton hotel, we reserved a suite, and it had a great balcony with expansive views of the city and bay. It is on one of Vancouver's hippest streets.

Another nice point about the Andra. Although we had made a reservation way in advance and at a very good rate, I called one day to check on something -- I think the parking. The guy on the phone asked when we were staying there and wanted to check our reservation. He came back and said, "oh, we're now offering a promotion and I can change your rate to $20 a room less" so he did. How many places would do that on their own?

Let me add to the Seattle confusion..

We stayed at Inn at Harbor Steps a few weeks ago and loved it. Actually bumped into another couple who were doing the same thing you're planning to do. Location is great; two blocks from the Market in one direction, a half dozen from Pioneer Square in the other, and literally steps down to the waterfront.

From what we saw, Inn at the Market probably best fits your criteria. Except for price.

BTW, if you tell the Hotel Vintage Park you are in town for a wedding, they offer a 10% discount.

We stayed 5 nights at the Alexis in Seattle and loved it. Then we stayed 1 night at Inn at the Market, after we got back from Vancouver, and loved it too, though DH didn't care for the Tempurpedic mattress.

Seattle- Eh, don't know how many "perks" you want, but I usually just choose the most reasonable chain hotel closest to Seattle Center- I can get just about everywhere from there...."breakfast" differs dramatically. Call the place first (if it's a chain) and ask "what exactly does your continental breakfast include?"

In the good old days this was true. Nowadays, $200 US is about C227$, not much of a difference.

The very best hotel in Vancouver before/after a cruise is Fairmont Waterfront..it's directly across the street from the cruise ship terminal and one of the finest hotels I have ever visited. In Seattle I would stay at the Fairmont Olympic but it may not be convenient for your plans............

We stayed at the Inn at the Market in Seattle and liked it well enough. It's a great location. The rooms on the harbour side are MUCH nicer than the rooms on the city side (ours was city but I had a chance to go in and look at a harbourside room). The only odd thing is that the hotel isn't centrally air-conditioned so you have a big air-conditioning unit sticking out of the wall of the room. We paid around $210 US on the city side of the hotel.
