hotels in san francisco
I will be going to san francisco around union square for 5 days in january 2017. I was looking for a hotel in the area. I looked at the Clift. Stanford Court, and the Palace. All seem to be offering pretty good deals. .the reviews on trip advisor were petty mixed for all of them. Does anyone have any thoughts about what might be best? thanks..

"around" Union square??
Stanford Court is on Nob Hill - a very steep 4 block climb up from Union Sq. If you are young & like to exercise your walking/climbing abilities - fine. If you are older (like me) - you'll be taking public transportation to most places.
Palace is 3 blocks away.
Clift is 2 blocks away - on the Tenderloin side of Union Sq in the theater district.

I stayed at the Clift a few months ago and thought it was a decent hotel. It tries a bit hard to appeal to the hip crowd (and only partially succeeding, I'd say), but once you get past that, I found the staff quite helpful and the room was comfortable, if in need of a makeover.
I stayed at the Palace a couple years ago. Certainly, the location is worse IMO than the Clift. I also didn't like the rooms, finding them very dated, but certainly they were kept up okay. Staff were good, but less personal service than the Clift (not that I'm a high-touch guest).
Can't speak to the Stanford Court beyond saying that I don't care for the location.

Actually I wouldn't stay at any of the three.
The reason I suggested the Palace was I'd personally rather be closer to the Ferry Bldg/Embarcadero and SF Center than on Union Square.
But if you want to be close to US, look at the St Francis, Sir Francis Drake, and Grand Hyatt -- all at different price points.

Stayed at Sir Francis Drake and The Mark (when it was still Kimpton. Both were very good. The Serrano was a Kimpton, but no more. It is borderline sketchy area.
Still a favorite of ours, not right on Union Sq, The Mosser. They have really decent rates at that time of year of there isn't a convention in town.

In your shoes I would go for Union Square location; St Francis is old favorite, and right on the square, followed by SF Drake just off the square.
Marriott described above sounds good (haven't stayed there). Some grand hotels on Nob Hill (along with Stanford Court) are the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins...) but as mentioned they are a steep climb or crowded cable car ride uphill.
