We stayed at the Sonoma Hotel, right on town square last fall. I don't remember exactly what we paid per night, but it was under $200. It's a little "rustic" but clean and it was fine for us and the 2 other couples we were with.

Do try the El Pueblo Inn. It is about a mile from the Plaza and is very attractive with two buildings with gardens in between and a pool. It is reasonable.
The Sonoma Hotel, on the Plaza, is also reasonable, but, as mentioned rather "rustic". We had a terrible room there and have not gone back.

August is still off-season in sonoma, so I'd see what kind of "deal" you can get at the Sonoma Mission Inn or MacArthur Place. There's a very nice hotel right on the Plaza called the El Dorado Hotel (www.eldoradosonoma.com). The restaurant on the first floor is outstanding.
There's also the Renaissance Lodge and a few nice B&Bs a few blocks on the east side of the Plaza (the nice side!), but can't remember the names.

Wow I looked up The Lodge at Sonoma and the rooms are way spendy or not available for weekends in August. I stayed in a cottage room not long ago and it was like $189 but that was the real off season, February.
The back up is Sonoma Valley Inn whihc seems booked for all weekends in August but you can call to see.

If you want something different the Beltane Ranch which includes breakfast is reasonably priced:

Lots of accomodations in August are so expensive and unavailable.

I, too, was rather taken aback by the "August is still off season in Sonoma." Well, in any event, "reasonably priced" and "Wine Country" are not generally terms used together but here goes: The Inn at Sonoma has rooms for under $200 a night most times - especially if you book early! The other comments about el Pueblo, Sonoma Valley Inn, etc. are all accurate. Otherwise, even in this economy, Wine Country either isn't affected, or they haven't awoken from their slumbers to see there is a problem. And from the looks of things, it's the former - I was in Rutherford two weekends ago and everything was booked and packed from restaurants, to wineries, to lodging. So, not to be discouraging and I hope you find a great, inexpensive place - please let us know and good luck!
