hotels in NYC

We are planning our first trip to NYC in May and are trying to decide between two hotels -The Belvedere and Wyndham. It looks like they're both in central locations and we've been able to find pretty good rates for both of them. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as location, quality of hotel, etc?

My opinion of the Belvedere is not great. It is a very plain but clean hotel. Think huge Motel 6. Any Wyndham should be about 30 steps above the Belvedere, but I have been unable to find a Manhattan Wyndham even by visiting the Wyndham website. Where is it?

The Wyndham in New York is not part of the Wyndham chain. They are separate entities with very similar names!

The Wyndham (not part of the Wyndham chain) is at 42 W. 58th St. - between 5th & 6th Ave.

I stayed at the Belvedere in Nov. and thought it was just fine. It was clean and the price was right. Very conveniently located. It was my first trip to NYC, and I had a terrific time. Will definitely be back...

The Wyndham is an old fashioned hotel across the street from the side of the Plaza Hotel. Some people will not stay anywhere else, but be aware that the amenities are pretty slim(ie no shampoo, hair dryer etc). The bathrooms are very old and some of the matresses are not too comfortable. On the plus side the location is good and the rates are usually quite low. You can usually get a suite there for the price of a room at another hotel.

We stayed at the Belvedere last week and it was a great place, hotel is not bad at all with a very helpful staff. We walked to three Broadway shows, and a subway station is only one-two blocks away. There are so many restaurants near by. The bathroom was very clean, supply with all goodies and hair dryer. There is also a refigerator and microwave which we never used but it was nice to have such an option. We had a fantastic view from our window. We will stay there again.

I stayed at The Wyndham last Spring and you will either love it or hate it. It is small, charming, HUGE rooms (like small apartments if you get one of their affordable suites, which I recommend), old fashioned (plumbing, elevator man), but everything works and it's lovely. A good $$$ value, for sure. I would STRONGLY recommend that you ask for an inside, quiet room, however. Our first night was a disaster, as we had to listen to garbage trucks and laundry trucks loading and unloading from the back of the Plaza across the street--not a wink. Second night, we slept peacefully after transferring to another room. There isn't any view on this dark and narrow street anyway, so ask for an "air shaft" room and you will have a peaceful, heavenly oasis in a FANTASTIC and safe location!
