Hotels in Memphis, TN -- advice needed
Hi all,
We'll be in Memphis, NC, for about 3 days in mid-October and would appreciate suggestions for hotels. I don't know the city at all and while we'll have a car at our disposal, we'd like to be located in the centre of things with easy walking to sights, restaurants, etc. We'll drive to anything a little further afoot.
We'll need two rooms (traveling with friends) and a chain hotel is fine. I don't really know what to tell you about prices but probably up to $250/night would do, although less expensive would be fine too.
It doesn't have to be posh, just the usual -- clean and in a good area for walking around.
We'll be visiting Ashville and Nashville too and I'm going to post separate (but copy and paste) requests for each of those cities.

Well, I'd splurge and go with the Peabody (might not be a "splurge," could well be within your budget.) Very classy place, the ducks in the lobby are a hoot, and its location is ideal. https://www.peabodymemphis.com/

Second for the Peabody. If they're full, there's a Holiday Inn across the street.
You will find Memphis is not a city for walkers. (street crime?) My wife and I walked over a mile to Sun Studios, passing two people on the way over, and three on the way back. Lonely walk back from Beale Street at night. Definitely drive to the Civil Rights Museum, if that's on your itinerary.

DONE!
As it turned out, the Peabody had some very good specials, one of which was available all our three nights at $219/night which includes the $13.95/night service fee. The service fee covers wi-fi and a whole bunch of other stuff which we may or may not need but there it is if we want it. We'll get to see the ducks in the lobby and there's a historic tour of the hotel every day which sounds interesting.
When I called my friend to ask what she knew about the Peabody, she said that was the first hotel that was recommended to her!
So many thanks to you Gardyloo!!!

Fra, the Civil Rights Museum is definitely on our list. And thanks for the hint about walking. We're so used to walking everywhere in our own city, it's always a good reminder to think twice about it. We'll have a car so we'll be fine.

There is a FREE shuttle bus from in front of SUN Studios to the Rock 'n Soul Museum and to Graceland for patrons of Sun Studio. The first leaves at 10:15AM and at 15 minutes past the hour until 6:15PM.
I was doing research for a trip that I didn't get to take last May. At the Arcade restaurant across Main street from the Amtrak station, you can sit in a booth that Elvis sat in.
