Is there any particular reason you want to be in Key Largo? Generally speaking, Islamorada has nicer hotels and good restaurants. And if no one on this board give you a good suggestion (the only hotel in Islamorado I've stayed in is Cheeca Lodge, and it's pricey), check tripadvisor.com

They list the hotels and resorts by Key.

There is a decent Holiday Inn there with a nice indoor pool . . and the original African Queen is berthed right next door if that interests you at all.

I agree with the suggestion to go further than Key Largo. The Holiday Inn is okay, but just a basic HI and in the midst of Key Largo congestion. The vibe is much more relaxed and nicer in Islamorada. We used to stay at the White Gate Court resort and someone wrote about this place in a recent trip report -
