1) cultural history note, "turndown service" initially meant just a nice preparation of the room for bedtime (drawing curtains, turning down bed, neatening up a bit), and didn't involve candy!! I vaguely remember hearing about the candy thing at some point in my life.

2) and--I really like it very much. Especially if I'm travelling alone, it makes the room feel less lonely if I come home to it and see that someone has provided me with this extra care.
And I grew up staying in this kind of place once a year with my famly in the summer, pre-candy.

3) and as someone has pointed out, if one truly doesn't like it I am sure the housekeeping staff is happy to be relieved of a little job while you are there!!

Do you leave tips twice - once for the morning maid and once for the evening one, as obviosly another person would come in for an evening shift?

We usually don't because they are usually in and out in five minutes. We could use some advice on this one.
