Hotel suggestions San Francisco

This is to add to my other post about restaurants and visitor tips. My friend also mentioned she needs some suggestions for hotel accommodations for moderately priced hotels. If that is possible They are going in Sept so that hopefully is not the heigth of the tourists season.

Much of September is very pricey, conventions, the "fringe festival", opera season etc. If she has a car to park, Columbus Motor Inn for sure. Try to find out the week that she'll be traveling as rates double/triple if there's a big convention. The Dreamforce convention is Sept 15 to 18 so forgettabout visiting that week.

Does "moderate" mean a mid-priced hotel for the city in question, or does she have a maximum figure per night in mind?

Sept is in deed pricey because it is the best weather. TheMosser.com is a nice, clean, "reasonably" priced hotel. But a $$ amount will help.

On our last 2 trips to S.F. we stayed at the Mark Hopkins and the Stanford Court, both on Nob Hill. It's been a number of years, but at the time they were moderate and we enjoyed both. The hike up and down the hill can be a bit much but the area was safe and clean, one of the best in the city. The cable cars ran right outside both hotels.

If you have a veteran in your group you are in luck. The best deal in SF is the MARINES MEMORIAL HOTEL on Sutter, Great rates, great free happy hour and free breakfast. Go to their website to check on details. Location is also amazing.

Thanks traveldawg, I love the Marine Memorial Hotel! We've stayed there a couple of times. I mentioned it to her but her husband is not a veteran.

I have also stayed at the stanford court,( marriott brand) and thought it was moderately priced in a good neighborhood. We did have to hike it up a few streets when the cable cars stopped down below! LOL We were younger then, but it was a nice hotel.

My favorite is the Hotel Monaco. It can be moderate, based on the dates and availability.

The Monaco is no longer a Kimpton (they riddled themselves of all but 2 properties in SF) if that matters.

I thought there were budget constraints but apparently not. I would pass on Mark Hopkins and any other on Nob Hill. That gets to be a tiring walk up and down unless you buy a Muni pass for the Cable car as it is costly at $6 a ride without pass.

I live here, so don't stay in hotels, but if I did, I would definitely NOT stay on Nob Hill. These are very steep hills, not just "uphill" but "UP THE HILL". Budget matters, but my first choice of location would be the Embarcadero.

My favorite hotel was the Palomar, which was a Kimpton. It's now Hotel Zelos but looks pretty similar. It was really nice because it was so quiet if you got a room into the interior courtyard, you heard nothing from the city. And the rooms are huge but it's very convenient for all transportation being on Market St and near Powell. I've stayed in Stanford Court also and like it, also, but you do have the hill issue there. Both of these are about the same rate, probably around $300 in September for the lowest category room.

I wouldn't stay in the Mark HOpkins either due to location, although I'm sure it is lovely. It's about $150 more than Stanford/Zelos.

Friends of ours have stayed at the Mark Hopkins many times and told us that their last time was their last time unless it gets renovated.

Hotel Monaco's restaurant is good IMO -- Grand Cafe. As locals we don't stay in SF hotels but we do eat out and Grand Cafe is a favorite.

I loved the Grand Café too, but it has closed.
One of the best breakfasts I've ever had was there, in such a gorgeous space with excellent service.

Check the rates at the joie de vivre hotels for her dates -

My choice would be the Hotel Vitale and I do like the Embarcadero location, but I imagine the rates will be high in September. Worth checking though.

We stayed at The Monaco in February when it was still a Kimpton. The restaurant was closed for renovations. Normally, as an Inner Circle member, we get breakfast comps. Since there was no breakfast available, the Front Desk clerk went across the street and got us a $50 Starbucks card! Great service...sad it isn't a Kimpton any more. The irony of The Monaco was that it was Bill Kimpton's favorite hotel. There was a huge plaque in the lobby proclaiming this "fact"

We had a great dinner at Fifth Floor with a SF fodorite and her husband at The Palomar, but alas, that's gone too.
