I stayed at Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos last year, and they had a hot water kettle out on each room's veranda for coffee and tea. They provided individual packets of Folger's Coffee - like tea bags. Trust me, they pack a wallop and, while lacking in some of the flavor of Starbuck's ( I drink the Verona blend every morning here at home), they really helped with the caffeine addiction. I ALWAYS travel with these packets now!

We recently stayed at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa in Phoenix. Among the other wonderful amenities was a French Press Coffee Pot with little pots of excellent ground coffee. I had looked at the brand, but have forgotten the name.

We are coffee snobs and this was really excellent coffee and we loved using the French press. There was an electric hot water pot [that heated the water in a few minutes].

[And yes, I washed the ceramic mugs myself each day. ]

Generally more upscale hotels assume (want) you to order your coffee - along with breakfast from room service. Also, I think they assume people in a 5* place would want better coffee than you get from stale powder in a bag and a Mr Coffee machine that's been used for who knows what (as in real coffee from freshly ground beans).

I think a small portable coffeemaker is the way to go. We have a "4-cup" (which makes 2 actual cups) that we take everywhere, even to hotels that already have in-room coffee.

We decided on this after staying at one hotel, and looking inside the water reservoir. We were completely grossed out by the buildup of scale and God knows what it was.

I rarely use the in-room coffee maker, not because of cleanliness concerns, but because it usually only comes with powdered creamer. I don't have to have half-and-half, as another poster said, but it has to have come from a cow!!
