The Comfort Inn Midtown at 129 W 46 is less than a block from the bustle of Times Square, but on a relatively quiet block with a variety of interesting restaurants. When I stayed there, it was the only all-nonsmoking hotel in Manhattan.
As you probably know, if you call a hotel directly they can often find you a room even when the online booking or a chain's 800 phone number cannot.

The Paramount is running a special featured on travelzoo.com but it's a lousy hotel with miniscule rooms.
The best options I see in that area are
> the City Club for $235/night (plus tax so about $270 total/night) on quikbook.com It fully cancelable and no pre payment.
>Courtyard by Marriott TS South for $223/night plus tax on the Marriott website
>Residence Inn by Marriott for $259 plus tax.
You could book one of these and try bidding on Priceline for a 4* in midtown west. Someone has already reported winning the Royalton for $206/night for that weekend on biddingfortravel.com
You might also keep an eye out for other specials on travelzoo.

The Econo Lodge in Times Square is a dump. At over $200/night it's an outrage. Have a look at these photos then you decide.

Well - I don't know if the Econolodge is a dump - but it's certainly a defiition of about a 1/2* hotel. It looks like you can;t even walk around the bottom of the bed, has plastic furniture that looks to be peeling apart, cringeworthy decor and a phone that seems to have to live on the windowsill.
There have to be better places than this.

Some of the rooms are barely big enough for the bed

The building has fire escapes on the front

This is a 2* hotel at best. I would not stay there for over $200 when for a bit more, you can stay at one of the places I mentioned which are 3-4* and MILES better, nicer, newer. I HATE when travel agents try to sell you some bargain in a rotten place.
