hotel in philly near ballpark?

My wife and I received travel vouchers from USAir, and after two nights on the phone with them it was determined the only location we could fly to was Philly and the only time we could go was on Saturday June 21 returning the next day. We are not getting into town until 6:00 pm and leaving the next morning at 7:50. We are going to catch a Phillies game and we want to get a hotel near the ballpark, cost not that great of a concern, and like all Philly Virgins, we want to know where to get a good cheesesteak in the same area. As always, help is appreciated fodorites.

I don't see how you are going to have time to mix a baseball game and a cheesesteak in with only 12 hrs in Philly. Getting in at 6 gives you very little time to get to the ballpark. I am assuming a cab. You may be better off trying for a hotel near the locations of the Cheesesteaks (I believe its South St) and hope they are open late after the game.

There are very few lodging options near the ballpark, plus the area isn't that nice. You'd be better off staying near Rittenhouse Sq or around City Hall, then either take public transport or cab to the ballpark.

Best cheesesteak is either Gino's or Pat's: they're located across the street from each other. Again, best way to get there is take a cab with your limited time.

You'll save time, money, trouble, and aggravation if you take the subway to the ballpark. Just ride the Orange Line to its southern end at Pattison, then walk to the park. If you do this, you can stay anywhere in Center City, and, if you buy tokens at the vending machines (cash ONLY), the total cost for two people to get between your lodging and the park will be about $7.

To get to Center City direct from the airport, ride the airport line.

I agree with the others that trying to see a Phillies game after arriving at PHL at 6 pm will be QUITE a rush, and make going to the corner of Pats / Genos just about impossible. Might be better to get to hotel, walk past Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, and then take a cab down to Pats / Genos at 10th and Passyunk (several blocks below South Street). You may wish to wander about South Street after your cheese steaks just for the atmosphere.

Get an early breakfast at a diner and ask for scrapple. Just make certain it's the brand that proudly advertises "No Snouts."

I wouldn't plan a Philly trip around Genos or Pats. There are too many places in Philly with much better cheesesteaks. Do a search here for the many varied cheesesteak opinions.

Get your cheesesteak at the game. Tony Lukes does a fine cheesesteak right at the ballpark. Better yet, get their roast pork sandwich with asiago cheese and broccoi rabe.

I have another option for you. Fly into PHL and check into an airport motel then cab it over to the ballpark. Its not far. I stayed at the Sheraton Suites last weekend and it was very nice. Other options are the Marriotts. If you want a cheesesteak late night you can also cab it down to South St. to Jims. I know they are open late.
