South Station is at the edge of the Financial District and just over a bridge from the newer Seaport District. It is an old-time rail station that has recently undergone some nice renovations. There is much more in the area than tracks and switches.

Ok, Gang, just when I thought it was all decided . . .
After mulling it over, I opted to rent a car from Alamo, to return morning, Nov. 11th, at their 270 Atlantic Ave. location.
Don Topaz: from what you said earlier- if I take the Mass Pike and then up 93 to my turn off, I should be able to avoid parade or other traffic from hotel to Alamo drop.
Sound right?
My MapQuest check then showed a 12 min walk from Alamo to the South Amtrak Station.
Any further comments - or recommendations about driving in Boston?

Hey, you've gotten good advice from some local folks and I think Crowne Plaza is OK location since you'll be using bus etc. anyway. Have taken #57 bus often from Watertown Yard (yes, tracks still there) to BU where son teaches and a few stops further to Fenway Park. I am remembering how the Cubs beat the Sox three straight games there last summer. We can second nearby Amarin and Bertuccis for good eating.
As for Amtrak I do like the idea of leaving from South Station and would just use cabs or other transport...and I wouldn't rent a car in Boston. But since you have it will free you to explore the area. No, I wouldn't drive in Boston but you can see sights if time in Concord, Salem, etc. Still would use 57 bus or transit in city. (

It's a hefty hike with plenty of street crossings from 270 Atlantic (adjacent to the Aquarium) to So Station, especially if you are dealing with luggage. And watch out for the wind -- many years ago I walked daily between So Station and my job at 470 Atlantic Ave, and buildings can create a howling wind tunnel. If it were me, I'd return the car to Logan (same amount of travel time and easier to navigate compared to Atlantic Ave from the Crowne Plaza), then take the Silver Line bus from Logan directly to So Station. Best of all, the Silver Line is free from Logan to So Station.
