I stayed at the Knickerbocker in Chi twice around 1996 when my husband had meetings in Chicago. Its an elegant gentleman's hotel complete with wood paneled rooms and a nice restaurant. Its on a corner of Michigan & ? but I remember walking all over Michigan Avenue shopping. It's on the same side of the street as the Water Tower but a few blocks further down. We came in at 4 in the morning and had a reservation but our room was given away somehoe and to make amends they gave us "The Knickerbocker Suite" which was fantastic! They're very nice there. If you need restaurants (again from 1996...hope they're still there) I liked Cafe BabaReba and Skoozi (they sang opera while you dined) adn had great deli food in the Water Tower. Walk around and look at all the outdoor art (Calder, etc) everywhere you look in that town! The Art Institute is great, too. Chicago also has offbeat tours (ask the conceirge) like where famous mob hangouts were and driveby sites like the St Valentines Day Massacre. There's a Marina, too. Great town!

We stayed 2 wekends ago at the Best Western on East Ohio just 50yds off Michigan and close to Wrigley building end of Michigan.Great location. Its been recently renovated and is excellent value tourist class hotel. Only drawback are lifts which take forever to arrive.Rooms are perfectly adequate. We got good rates using hotrooms.com.

There's a Best Western Inn of Chicago that's a block east of Michigan Avenue -- excellent location and a good value (i.e., cheaper) compared to the other hotels already mentioned. There's also a Motel 6 a blcok from the BW - someone else on a Chicago forum had good things to say about that place.

You didn't mention any budget constraints, but if you have them, I'd recommend the Best Western, which is just off Michigan Ave. and is actually on old hotel, The Inn of Chicago, that has been totally refurbished. It's not your typical Best Western, and the location and price can't be beat. As a result, though, you'll need to book far in advance. Have fun in Chicago!
