Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego? What did you think?

We were there in March, 1998; it's overpriced and too big; this year we stayed at the Marriott (used to be a Meridien I think) and were much happier.

The Hotel Del is a wonderful old place, full of period interest and history, as well as being very comfortable, well-run, and right on the beach. It's a real San Diego institution that the community is very proud of. In my opinion, it would be a much more interesting place to stay, since it is so beautiful and unique.

We stayed for a business conference a few years ago. It impressed me as a unique property. Room quality probably varies a lot, but we liked being lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean, though sometimes had a hard time finding our way back to our room! It has a marvelous beach and beautiful grounds. I liked it.

I have nothing but the highest of praises for the Hotel Del Coronado. I'm a student traveller and over winter break I decided to give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. The wonderful front desk staff upgraded me from a standard room to an ocean front suite (a difference of 300 per night). Also, their brunches in the Crown Room are superb, even on weekdays. When in San Diego I won't stay anywhere else now.

Been there. Loved being able to walk out on the beach and collect sand dollars with the kids. The Australian opal shop in the basement is neat, too. The little island is nice to stroll. Very pleasant place.

Thanks everyone for the information. I will be staying there for a week the end of October and am looking forward to it.

I forgot to mention the big advantage that the Del has over all the other San Diego hotels -- a real live (?) ghost! I can't remember which room she stays in, but the hotel staff will be able to tell you all about her story.

We stayed there two years ago and have plans to be there next week. Make sure when you make your reservation that you ask for a room in the "Hotel"; otherwise, you could wind up in the "motel" next door. It is on-site, but you miss the feel of being at the Del. However, some people might prefer being at the other, which is more private. Hope this helps.

In regards to a previous poster's cavaet about which building you end up, the one next door is by no means a "motel". It's got the same amenities and just as expensive. However, if you want the actual Hotel Del Coronado experience, be sure to request a room in the Victorian building.

Remember though, only the new section has air conditioned rooms...
